Okay, is it worth putting heavy armour on them and removing it when you want to use you thief skills or is it best to stick with studded leather?

PS: Im playing tutu at the moment so the best studded leather I can get is +3 which is nothing compared to a set of full plate and a ring of protection.

I always just go with full plate and ring of prot. until i need to use theif skills. If your a person that likes to backstab alot this wouldn't work for you w/o invisibility potions. I normally just use an invisibility potion for the initial backstab and then go straight melee. At least in the BG1 part of tutu...after that I got with leather because backstabbing becomes so much more necessary.

Voted heavy armor although I always keep a light one for scouting. My usual tactic when getting ready for a fight is to take it of, stealth, re-equip move in and backstab and then use invis pots if I want to re-stab.

One of the components of the G3 BG2 Tweak Pack can allow the use of thieving skills in heavy armor albeit with hefty penalties, as per PnP rules.

Using a heavy armor until the time is right for light armor? This I consider cheesy tactics. It's like you would carry in your backpack an armor and you put it on when you are about to search for traps. However, this is unrealistic since it means you already know where those traps are.
Light armor I say and switch to medium if you get your hands on some medium armor that allows thieving, like elven chainmail or some dragon scales armor.

Heavy armor, although I do like to use some medium weight for gettting th best out of both worlds. Elven chains, elven chains...

Well you can turn your statement around as well and argue that you wear light out of combat and only equip the heavy when you've spotted some enemies through scouting. So you can might as well say that I'm using light armour until the time is right to use heavy armour :p.

Call it whatever you like is still a cheesy tactic. Abusing the rules like this is not what I call roleplaying. Is powergaming.

So a thief is able to be stealthy with a plate armor in his backpack. Brilliant logic.:D

There's next to nothing about these games that is realistic, so arguing that this particular thing turns it from true roleplaying into powergaming is silly. You'd need several beasts of burden just to carry all of that phat lewt you get in a few hours of playing, but I kinda doubt that you stay true to roleplaying and only carry as much as you could put in one backpack. I also doubt that you drop it all to the ground every time you enter a fight, which would be realistic. The amount of gold alone you carry around would fill several bank vaults. And that's just the beginning.

So, seriously, arguments going in the roleplaying vs. powergaming direction are quite pointless. I seriously doubt ANYONE is truly roleplaying any of these games. They may think they are, but in reality, they're just powergaming a bit less, to the point where it's still relatively fun and not merely tedious.

And there's nothing wrong with either play style. Everyone is free to play the games in the way they find the most fun.

There is such great light armor in the game:

    Shadow Dragon Scale
    The Night Gift
    Human Flesh Armor
    Grandmaster's Armor
    Studded Leather of Thorns

There is no need for heavy armor. Even early in the game you can get the orc leather or skin of the ghoul -- both excellent armors.

Your F/T is a sniper and sneak attack specialist -- use him or her that way. The F/T is strongest if attacking from the backside, not a frontal assault.

The plural of thief is thieves....

    Bingo.

Hands up, anyone who has reloaded a saved game after their main character got killed. Guess what? You're not roleplaying, because death is final. Not to mention the fact that you are now going to do a bit of metagaming to get through the battle the second time. If you really want to roleplay, you should have started the game over right from the beginning. Which means you'd probably never get out of level 1 of Irenicus' dungeon.

    Bingo again.

Anyway, on topic, I usually go with one of the armors T2 mentioned, because I just can't be bothered switching all the time.

Unless you are using a plethora of difficulty-increasing mods, there's no reason to squeeze out every possible benefit like that. The game is easy enough as it is. Thiefs look cooler in something dark like Shadow Dragon Armor anyways.

Light armor. Like nataben states, I also like my thief to have that distinctive, hooded appearance.

Don't multi-dual class F/T always end up using bulky fighter avatar, rather than slender, hooded thief one? So even if you equip the light armor, you won't get the 'hood', but will look like a fighter garbed in light armor.

Ofcourse there is a mod to change this, IIRC.

IMHO, light armor all the way for a thief/fighter multi class. T/M should go commando or equip a robe of any kind. Ofcourse, if you have elven chainmail...

Nowadays I'm playing BG2 only with 1PP installed. I hate the paperdolls from the original BG2. The ones from BG1/IWD1 look way better.

A mod that replaces the paperdolls in BG2 with the ones from BG1. You can find it on Spellhold Studios board.

Thanks for the replies. Some good insight there. Generally I stick to light armours as well, but he seems to always be the target due to a mod I think (crappiest AC and all that) Could be wrong though.

Ive got another question regarding f/t's: What is the best class of weapon for them to use?

Currently, I have him using 2 long swords, though I have had f/t's in the past using halberds and 2 handed swords, with a katana or something for backstabbing when I need it.

    @T2
Yes, I know the plural of thief is thieves. I was only awake for about 10 minutes before posting this thread and had a rather large mental block :p
