For those of you who don't know, Vista's SP1 is currently in a Beta phase right now, and is scheduled to be released in the first quarter of 2008. Once it's here though...the download will be ~50MB...and you'll need a minimum of *7GB* during the installation.

PC World Magazine describes the improvements:
Here are a few more fixes/tweaks/improvements:
    • BitLocker will also support encryption of more than one drive.
    • The Network Diagnostics tool gets improved
    • It introduces a new file system (exFAT)
    • DX10 gets an update...so maybe now game developers will *want* to work with it.
    • It also incorporates most of the patches that have already been released.
I really hope the UAC is heavily modified so it's not so damn annoying. And I'd like the see the overall performance of Vista finally match of exceed XP's speed... :rolling:

While Vista's sales are still pathetic at best (most PCs with the OS came with it preinstalled), that might change once SP1 is released.

Up 'till now, the most common answer given to people who asked, "Should I get Vista?" has been, "I'd wait until after SP1 comes out." But now that it's almost here, I'm wondering if that answer will change to something worse than a general 'wait and see' answer. :bad: :rolling:

You know what I find amusing, yet profundly stupid? Seeing cheap, entry-level PCs with 512 MB of RAM running Vista. Last time I checked, a naked, unoptimized Vista install uses roughly 568 MB of memory. Memory swapping, anyone?

And TBT, I'm so tired of the damm blue and green XP that whenever I get to build a box with Vista, it's a refreshing change (I STILL hate M$, make no mistake about it).

Yeah, I installed a xp a few days ago on an amd am2 machine. I had to use a floppy to load the sata driver for the hdd. Second floppy, third floppy and after 8 tries I got the tiny drivers loaded. So for me: Yeah vista.

You know, after reading several more articles on Vista, I think I'm going to wait for SP2 along with Tal. It's sad that the OS sucks so much that M$ was forced to extend the support life of XP. Now that it is commonly known that you can call M$ and make them downgrade your OS back to Vista, more and more people are doing it once they get a new computer with Vista pre-installed...that is, if they weren't able to get XP at the POS in the first place. :rolling:

I am going to migrate to Vista as soon as the service pack is out. The main reason is that I need to switch to a 64-bit OS. So I am switching straight to Vista instead of going with the x64 edition of XP. I also like some of the new features that Vista has.

One more nail in the Vista Coffin: XP's SP3 is in Beta right now. Here's an excerpt from M$:
I think it's odd that SP3 doesn't include IE7, but you can still download it from Windows Update. Maybe M$ finally figured out that most people use something other than IE. :p :rolling:

yeah, I'm very keen for this.

too bad the download can be as large as 1GB, depending on what updates you already have, and what version of vista you have. oh well...

Even given that Vista's problems are fixed, is there any compelling reason to upgrade? I'm not really sure why I should consider reinstalling Vista when XP does everything I want with minimal problems.

No, I dont see any compelling reasons to upgrade in your case. Rather wait until DX10 games are out in force, and developers have learned to use DX10 better. Right now, games like Crysis run worse in DX10 than in DX9 while mostly looking the same.

You will also lose some audio compatibility.

It does have a nice GUI, and it has built in media player software. But on the whole, I just dont think the improvement is worth it if you already own XP.

That being said, if you want to use 4GB of RAM, you need a 64 bit OS, and if you get a 64 bit OS, you may as well get Vista.

Its not terrible. Its just that it doesnt offer any compelling reasons to upgrade right now, but does have a few minor and major problems. I've been lucky so far, no major problems.

Only use vista if it comes on your new pc. Even after sp1. When the crashes stop I will inform the rest.

I've been disappointed with what I've seen of Vista so far.

I read that they're going to drop the price on Vista in Europe soon to make more people switch over.

Funny you mention that. I was reading an article that compared the 2 newest M$ OSes, Mac OS 10.whatever Leopard is, and Linux. The current retail price for the various versions of Windows Vista is anywhere from $200 to $400! Windows XP Pro is still $270 for the full retail version.

With prices like that, it's no wonder that most people get their operating system preinstalled on their new computer! :nono:
