laptop question

    Just curious, but is it detrimental in the immediate or long-run if you leave your laptop on all the time (plugged into an external power source of course)?

    No more detrimental than doing it with your average desktop computer... aside from the fact that you're constantly drawing power, all the components are in use and consequently if one is prone to failure, it'll do so sooner.

    Definitely turn it off if you're not using it. Prolongs the life of pretty much every electronic device.

    That's not necessarily true. When an electronic device is powered on, there are inrush current spikes that cause wear. On the other hand things with moveable parts like fans and spinning hard drives wear out from use.

    So it's really up for grabs, but either way you will likely not notice a significant difference unless for example you have a really cheap fan that doesn't have a very long usage lifetime.

    Another thing to consider is heat. An electronic device will wear out faster if it constantly goes from a cold sate, to hot, and then back to cold. This action can also cause add-in cards to slowly rise out of their sockets...but that doesn't really apply to laptops.

    The parts *inside* your laptop might not be the only things suffering though...Windows is notorious for slowing down if a computer is left on too long. A simple restart usually takes care of the slow down... :rolling:

    I was mostly aiming for computer hardware, where hard drives are the most problematic in this regard.

    What I would do is see if there is any history of failing fans in that model, and if not, you're probably good to go. I would imagine most parts in a laptop are good quality...
