I saw this tonight, and I absolutely loved it. Any thoughts from you people?

 

Just back from the cinema now and I must say I thought it was fantastic. Extremely well made. One of our group didn't enjoy it, she thought it was well done but that it was too gloomy. I thought that axeing the majority of the songs that didn't belong to the two leads was the cause of this. The love story between the two naive youngsters was the only example of the hope and better side of humanity and this was sidelined.

I was pleasantly surprised at the voices of the cast. To be honest I don't think they were quite as good as they should have been but they weren't bad. I thought it very noticeable that Anthony (the innocent sailor) was the only one I didn't recognise as regularly appearing in movies and that he had the best voice by far. The acting was of a superb standard though. I especially enjoyed Helena Bonham Carter, whom I thought was marvellous.

 

I want to see this one. I just don't get to the theatre that much any more...

 

Loved it. But in one respect I was really taken aback: how graphic and bloody it is. Not that that's a bad thing, and I appreciate the faithfulness to the subject matter. But there were times I looked over at my buddy and just "Dude...gawd damn!" The agonizing gurgle sound when Sasha Baron Cohen's throught gets gut....yeesh.

The music was outstanding, too. And I've re-fallen in love with Helena Bonham Carter.

 

I am absolutely planning to see it. In English if at all possible (Metropolis, here I come!).

 

It's not as good as the BBC version with Ray Winstone. Burton's works are always a bit more 'weird' than necessary. I have to cringe when any film suddenly breaks out into song.

 

I thought Helena Bonham Carter was amazing in it, simple as that. She played the character perfectly.

And of course, poor unhinged Todd... Depp put his mark on the role, quite literally. The white streak in the hair was his idea.

 

Um...it's a musical...

 

Yeah, I don't like them. It ruins what could potentially be a really cool film. Burton does that lot.

 

Right, but you do know that Sweeney Todd was originally written as a musical, right? The singing and dancing weren't Tim Burton's doing, they were Stephen Sondheim's.

Incidentally, I'm now extremely interested in the Ray Winstone version...he rules.

 

Yeah, I realise that. It's just the only version I've seen before the Burton one was the BBC one. Which isn't a musical, and is very enjoyable and more about the killing and his relationship with the pie woman. So naturally I compare them and see where Depp's one fell short.

The Winstone/BBC one is good. It's also got Irenicus in it (David Warner). I think Winstone does a good job in it, it's very watchable.

Agreed, Ray Winstone is a proper lad.
