I may be doing some traveling, and would like to install Baldur's Gate on a REALLY old laptop that I was given some time ago. I'd like to know if the following procedure to transfer my current install would work

After installing the game, TOTSC, and the official patch, can I simply copy my override and saved games folders from my WinXP desktop to this Win98 laptop and expect the mods and tweaks to work? It's mostly only Baldurdash, ease-of-use, and one other I can't recall off-hand.

Can I do this, or do I need to get out my winapps backup cd and rerun the installers?

As far as I recall none of the information that the game installs in the registry is essential. I've moved installs of IE games before in the same way and everything works like a charm. The only thing that will be broken is the autorun menu (which does depend on resitry keys), so you will need to run the game executable (BGmain) directly. Mods install everything within the BG subfolders as well, so that shouldn't be a problem either.

This is probably the wrong forum to ask, but since you said IE games, does that mean I can do a minimum install of Icewind Dale as well using the same procedure to transfer mods?

I'm not sure how well it will run however. The laptop is only 250mhz, with 96mb of RAM and a 4x CD-ROM. The HD is only 4gb, so I can't do more than minimum installs. It is well in the recomended requirements for Baldur's Gate, but it falls in the middle of the processor speed requirements for Icewind dale. I'm not even going to try BG2. Besides, I could only install one or two games on it.

It's old, but it was free. I'm taking it primarily so I can use a word processor and a spreadsheet, and I've run those types of programs with a 1mhz, 128 KILObyte (1/8MB) Apple IIe.

You need 2.50 gb for a complete instal of BG1 and less than 2 gb for IWD (with HoW and TotL). That should be enough if you only mean to use that laptop for word processing and stuff.

I'd advise installing everything on the "donor" PC, although I don't think any mods actually check the registry. I've not tried it with IWD, but I don't see why it wouldn't work (it works for both BGs and PST)

I'm most definetly NOT doing a complete install. Only minimum. Especially since your figures of 2.5 + 2 = 4.5 > 3.9GB of available space after formatting, not even counting the OS, Office suite, or Mozilla web browser (I haven't upgraded it much). I realize it will probably be pretty choppy with a slow CD-ROM, but I'm not spending money on upgrading an obsolete laptop.

[IMG] you will also need to copy the dialog.tlk to ensure the mods work correctly too. This stores all the text accessed in the game.
