When I was running XP I tried 64 and 32 bit. The only thing I liked about the 64 bit system was the ability to use more RAM; however, the 64 bit XP has driver issues, stability issues, etc... when compared to 32 bit XP. If you have Vista I would say there is a 50/50 chance but with XP there is a 25/75 chance depending on compability, drivers, software stability, etc....

Microsoft surely did one thing right with Vista and that is create a fairly stable 64 bit OS.

Uh, bad news. I was hoping for a PC for BG games AND the new Drakensang :)
I will bring BG to a friends brandnew 64bit XP comp and we'll give it a try.

...or I will simply only use 3 Gig of RAM.

    Thanks for the answer!

More generally, a few questions on 64bit:

I heard all the stories about 64bit being so troublesome because of the driver issues. Is that still true? If I buy 'hardware with names' and have associated product support, will I avoind those problems? Should I look up whether I'll have 64bit driver support before I buy? Or are the troubles primarily because of non-comupter electronics like cameras, mp3 players and the like? Is there a performance jump compared to 32bit, yet, say in VISTA?

Generally you might find a slight performance jump if an application is specifically coded to take advantage of 64 bit, and also if it really needs it. Some operations can be done faster with a 64 bit CPU than with a 32 bit CPU, but there arent many of them as far as I know.

With WinXP 64 bit, I have heard there are loads of driver issues, but with Vista, not so much. I have Vista Home Premium 64 bit at home, no problems so far. the only devices I have had problems with are obscure things like webcams. But most devices, including motherboard chipsets, wifi cards, graphics cards etc all have some kind of default driver built in.

if you buy brand name stuff you should be okay, but remember that some brand names just repackage other lesser known brand name stuff. My Belkin Wireless G+ network adapter uses a Broadcom chipset for example.

Also with Vista 64, as far as I know, anyone who wants their driver to be certified as WHQL has to provide both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of it. if thats true (and I think it is), it would explain why I've never seen a driver provided for Vista 32 but not for Vista 64.

Cameras and stuff I cant be sure of, have never linked up a camera to my PC. But my Sony MP3 players (both new and old) work fine.

Vista 64 bit is stable when compared to Windows XP 64 bit. When I did my prior build 3 years ago I went with Windows XP 64 bit but the OS was so unstable with hardware and software that I ended up ordering Windows Media Center.

When I was making my new build I was hoping I could obtain Vista Business 64 or Vista Ultimate 64. Both offer added security features over the Vista Home editions.

Vista 64 also has a compatibility option like Vista 32 and I believe you can select Windows XP SP2, which would make it a compatible for 32 bit apps. That is why Vista 64 has less issues with drivers, hardware, etc... It is also the first 64 bit OS that Microsoft has truly supported.

With Windows 7 a couple years away it would not surprise me to see Microsoft pushing it as a 64 bit OS with maybe Windows 7 basic as the 32 bit OS.

For those of you who hate Vista interface won't like Windows 7 so much either. Windows 7 is basically Vista with some updates to the code to improve system performance, which in my book is needed as Vista is a memory hog. If Windows 7 can find away to use memory like Windows 98 or even XP it will be a big improvement for Vista.
