So I'm trying to find information on the legality of flashing light accessories for motor vehicles. I've seen some cars that have a center brake light that flashes when they apply the brakes. I've also seen cars that have a license plate frame that has LED chaser lights when the brake is applied.

I am making a circuit that would flash LEDs in a sequence when the brakes are applied, and I need to know if it's legal or not. I'm hoping to be able to sell the circuit internationally, so his is really a question for *all* the SP lawyers, not just the ones in the US.

    Thanks guys. :rolling:

I'm not a lawyer, but I play one during sex games

OK, that was a seriously lame joke. I mean, really, really lame. I apologize, but I couldn't resist.

I've seen similar LED flashers on cars in Canada. One that I saw even flashed a message that you can presumably change from time to time, like a signature on e-mail. I saw a unit that was where a trailer hitch would be. The unit was shaped like a skull and when the brakes were applied, the eyes lit up.

Given that the police in Canada have little else to do because pot smoking liberals make it difficult to actually catch and punish real criminals, I would assume that they would have forced the removal of the LED gadgets.

This is more of a question for traffic regulators than lawyers. The legality of gadgets like that can vary from one country/state to another. So I think a call/browse to your local traffic department would yield a definitive answer.

I believe stuff like that is illegal in Massachusetts, which leads me to believe that, as Tal said, it is State-by-state. So... good luck?

What Tal said; I know in the United States each state has it own Bureau of Motor Vehicles / Depart of Transportation, which determines what is legal or illegal for automobiles.

I added an after market exhaust to my 3rd generation Hyundai Tiburon; however, the cop interperation of the law from town to town differed, which resulted in me turning my car back to stock and eventually selling it as cops are idiots and didn't realize a stock exhaust if it hit them in the head.

It's illegal in The Netherlands. I wouldn't be surprised it it's illegal all over Europe, since officially everything you want to put on your car needs to have an E-certification and this certification is a European standard (although the same rules don't apply everywhere, so it might be legal to ride around with an E-certified part somewhere, while it is illegal somewhere else in Europe, even though the part complies with regulations. I know, I think it's confusing as well). If it doesn't have this certification, it is illegal to ride around with it.
