    Go here:

    http://www.benchmark.pl/zestawienie_gpu.html

Select "English" where it says "polski". As you see, for example 4850 is more powerful than 9800 GTX, but in games, the latter seems to perform slightly better. And 4850 was supposed to be the killer of 9800, possibly on par with GX2!

I remember a similar thing with ATI 1300 and 1600. Those were said to be oh so great cards, they were oh so recommended by vendors and other people, but still, they didn't perform that well.

Also given the infamous technical problems with 4850 - overheating, no fan regulation in the driver until mid October (IIRC) (manual edition of driver profiles did help, though)... heh, I thought it was just the temps, but when I replaced the cooler with Accelero S1 rev. 2 and hung a 12 cm fan under the heatsink on cords, I reduced the temps so that they can't seem to exceed 38C in games. And I still experience various problems in games, including numerous freezes, occasional artifacts and even system hangs. The system confirms it's driver errors. Chances are it's not even the hardware but the driver coding, then. Either way, I probably want nVidia for my next card.

At the moment, I'd probably recommend 9800 GTX+ to anyone who wants something more powerful than the best fps per dollar, that is, a used 8800 GT (preferably OCed to the max) - barring a working ATI 4850, which is better.

Damn you chev! Why do you tell me this now? This is my first post from my new computer, with a 4850 card. :(

I find that the ATi drivers are great on ATi AMD mobo; Intel though is another story.

Though I do agree Nvidia does make much better drivers; they tend to update them at least 2 times a year.

Its is the nvidia pixie that plays havoc. You need cats to keep it from the case.

Sorry to hear you still have problems whit your card. I do/did not have any problems whit my 3 ati cards in a row. Whit ati some brands are better than others.
