    Hi Guys

I was just wondering...is there any way to set up a laptop that has windows vista so that you have to put in a password before you can download any programmes?

My sister keeps downloading messenger programs and games onto the laptop that gets used for our business. I don't want to password the whole computer as she does use it for her own job and I don't want to have to create different user accounts.

    Any ideas?

    Beat down your sister :D

As far as password protected downloads... I'm not sure. I don't use Vista (XP still) and so I don't know what all is possible with that. Different user accounts would have been my suggestion if you hadn't already said that wasn't wanted.

I'm sure if you looked you could find some 3rd party programs to block downloading...however I doubt they would be reliable or safe.

You could always ask her to stop downloading...just as a radical idea. :p

Thanks guys, I'll have a look. I have asked her to stop downloading stuff but she thinks that I'm just saying it to be mean...

There are NO good, consumer-level approaches other than separate user accounts.

Heck, even that isn't foolproof under XP Home.

I would go with an admin and one user account. The admin account should only be used for downloading software and doing system updates. The user account would be for every day computing.

I have my Vista system setup this way; it eliminates any issues I have with friends or family trying to download software on my computer that I do not want. It also reduces the chance of viruses and spyware being uploaded on the PC. I highly recommend this route.

If a user does try to download software the system will require a password to bypass the user/admin account setup; if the user does not know the password the software will not be downloaded. It is a great feature and should be used on all computers. It is very similar to how Linux works in a GUI.
