[IMG] The Waitomo Glowworm Cave is on the North Island of New Zealand, known for its population of glowworms. These glowworms are found exclusively in New Zealand and around the size of an average mosquito. A tour through the cave concludes with a boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto. The boat takes the visitor onto the underground Waitomo River where the only light comes from the tiny glowworms creating a sky of living lights.

Didn't know it was a rarity...

I've been. It's nice. There's some down here at the South Island too.

    That's creepy! I hate bugs!

That being said, if I can see them in the dark, that is better so I can either squish or run :)

Although that is a pretty cool cave. Glowing things always interest me.

I would love to see that. We used to see the occasional firefly around here but the summers haven't been warm enough for the last several years.

I saw that on a NatGeo show...those "beads" are balls of mucus that trap bugs, and then the worms reel it up to eat. Gross...but it looks pretty cool with the lights out.

To burst everyone's bubble (including mine), my girlfriend (biology major) explained to me that the glowy bits are essentially mucus + saliva of the glow worms, designed to catch prey. So basically it's like the stuff that comes out of your nose when you have a cold, hanging really low, and sticking to pieces of pizza, and you sniffing really hard to bring the pizza to your mouth.

Buuuuut if it helps it's really quite pretty in the caves, looking much like starlight. :)

I have been to Waitomo Caves several times. It's about 2 hours drive from where I live. It's really cool. There are also plenty of the nice stalagtites and stalagmites to look at as well as a pretty popular blackwater rafting trip you can do.

Are you planning to visit Waitomo, Taluntain?

If I'm ever around there, sure, but not in the foreseeable future. ;) This was just a random bit of coolness that I've chanced upon online.

That is cool, mucus or not.

But the thing is that pictures and stories like this usually serve only to depress me. Why? Because the world is FILLED with awesomely cool stuff like this, and I know that I'll never have the resources to see even a fraction of all the cool stuff out there. Thank God for National Geographic and the 'Net!

But LKD, have you even been to see all the cool stuff that is nearby to you? No excuse for not seeing your local sights at least.

Deathmage, if you're going to get disgusted by the biological explanation of things, well... better not ask your girlfriend what honey really is :p

@Ziad: I try not to think about these things. :p

And I looked up what bee propolis is the other day since I use it for my cold sores. Wish I didn't...

I'm coming down to SLC to see you, Kitrax, and I'm bringing a Chinese girl of my acquaintance. Her name is "Chu mi"! :D

On another note, I've seen lots of the scenery here in Alberta, such as Banff and Jasper and the big frickin' glacier the name of which escapes me, and I've climbed my share of mountains as a child*. But I wanna see some of the tropical stuff before I die. I'd love to go on a Safari to Africa but given the political dangers inherit there that's not bloody likely.

Lovely, Tal. And to you party poopers I say: See no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil. What are we but a bunch of elements tossed together and by some freak of nature having minds that can appreciate the beauty around us. At least some of us can. :)
