Screen flicker on start up

Hi folks, any advice on this would be a big help!

My Mum's laptop has started playing up over past couple of days. When she switches it on the screen is darker than usual and flickers black on the start up screens. Once she reaches the desktop it's a bit of a lottery whether it shows up normally or jusy shows a black screen but after a while it always turns onto a black screen. This can be after a couple of hours or after a full day but she always has to restart.

Unfortunately, I have the technical savvy of a goldfish, so I'd really appreciate any help in this. Thanks in advance!

 

Actually, take a look on eBay...you can get replacement backlights for pretty cheap. And the web has tons of useful guides for doing the repair yourself.

The screen is the most fragile part of a laptop...so yeah...kind of. However, before you go out and buy a replacement, find a guide and read it. The cables connecting the backlight just might need to be re-seated. I'd look in to that to see if it fixes the problem before you spend any money.

What laptop is it? Brand name laptops almost always have very detailed guides.

I found a similar problem on Toshiba’s forums, and I suspect that the cables to/from the CCFL inverter might be loose.... That's actually an easy fix, since all you have to do is remove a few panels to get to it, and wiggle the wires a bit.
