Duggars are set to have a 20th child. For heaven's sake, when is enough enough?

Can you imagine being pretty much constantly pregnant for the past 23 years? Not to mention raising that many kids... unbelievable.

    [sarcasm] FFS! [/sarcasm]

Seriously, I love how they proudly proclaim that they don't use birth control (as if it weren't obvious), yet simultaneously being capable of being the poster-children for why birth control might not be such a bad idea.

Gotta love fundamentalists... I guess reality TV somehow fits their appropriateness agenda. It's just the height of irony that the only TV that they watch and allow their children to watch is "wholesome family programming on DVDs, and various historical events". Actually, scratch irony. Hypocrisy is more like it. But I guess the millions that their show brings in help to put their conscience at rest. :heh:

The Duggers are - straight up - the creepiest, weirdest people on TV, in my opinion.

And as f-ed up as modern TV is, I know that is saying something.

C'mon you guys! Give 'em their due!

At least Jim Bob is being monogamous instead of following Warren Jeffs example! ;)

A small concession I know, but I can't help but make that comparison.

I got a kick how they say they don't let their kids date unless its chaperoned. Their oldest kids are in their 20s - you'd think they would let them out a bit more - especially considering the parents are apparently f-ing like bunnies.

Seriously though - they are lucky that they have had, up to this point, 19 normal children. Or at least 19 as normal children as they could have had given the situation that they are being raised in. She's already had 3 children past the age of 40, and this latest will be the 4th post-40 baby. 40 is when birth defects and genetic abnormalities increase dramatically. They are tempting fate at this point.

If you read up a bit on them you'll see that they view the kids literally as coming from God (I guess the hubby just holds the candle). So I'm pretty sure that retarded children would make no difference to them whatsoever and that they'd keep producing them anyway - they're gifts from God, not offspring they consciously and intentionally decide to have. They just happen!

That's not quite how they see things. The Duggars are subscribers to and enthusiastic proponents of the Quiverfull method, essentially meaning that as "pure christians" it is their duty to procreate as much as they are physically able to in order to do their part to reinforce God's army on earth. So it's not an "oh look, another baby! Thanks, God!" kind of thing, it's a deliberate strategy to crank out as many crazy ass christian kids as possible.

And you should hear these kids talk. They're so programmed it's not even funny.

Well, that's not what they're saying...

    (Huffington)

(FAQ entry.) There's more on that on their own website and in various interviews.

Apparently their last child was almost a miscarriage and will have life-long health problems, but that doesn't deter them. Playing a baby-making machine is also easy enough when you're keeping an army of kids who are brought up to be their siblings' keepers - effectively slaves to the scores of babies that she keeps popping out. Naturally she isn't capable of taking care of anywhere near as many on her own.

I don't think the two concepts are mutually exclusive, Tal. If a pro athlete comes out and says "God blessed us with another victory," it doesn't mean he and his team weren't trying to win. Their strategy is deliberate, but to them, babies are a gift from God and despite their own contribution, God gets the credit. Or at least that's what they say to people when asked.

Mind you, I'm not defending them. They're nutbars.

I find it odd that they wouldn't mention "being quiverfull" anywhere on their site as most such people wear it like a badge of honour.... though maybe it's just too obvious for words. :shake: Have you actually seen them mention that they subscribe to this philosophy anywhere? I mean, it's clear enough that they do, I just find it odd that I can't find any mention of it from them.

    Edit: interesting reading...

You may be right. Evidently in their new book they claim they aren't Quiverfull, and cite Wikipedia as the source for the misconception that they are. Which strikes me as odd, since I first read about Quiverfull on the Duggar's web site a few years ago. Maybe there's a part of the movement they no longer want to associate with, or TLC advised them to shy away from it for the sake of the show (more likely). Who knows.

    Another interesting piece on them:

Someone has 20 cats, people want to lock them up. Someone has 20 kids, they get a TV show.

I'd like to see a study done of how these kids turn out in a few years. I would imagine that in the position of one of the eldest children, once I was 18 I wouild be out of there so fast my parents' heads would spin. As Tal said, I wouldn't want to be a slave-servant taking care of the kids that my mother was too stupid to realize that she wouldn't be able to take care of herself.

I mean, expecting the kids in the family to pitch in is one thing. Having 20 kids is ridonculous. There just doesn't seem to me to be a way to give each child the one on one attention (s)he would need.

I would go so far as to say that these people are certifiably insane. There are limits to everything.

My mother had 11 siblings. My sister has nine kids. In my church was a family with 16 kids. IMO most kids in large families are pretty happy.

From what I've read they're practically isolationists - they don't want or have any contact with non-fundamentalists if they can help it. They don't allow children to have non-fundamentalist friends and the few friends that they do have are thoroughly screened (along with their families) to make sure that they wouldn't contaminate their children with any crazy notions like being allowed to listen to sinful music. I read that they prohibit even Christian rock. And, of course, any interaction between children of different families is constantly supervised by parents.

They don't allow children to participate in group events or join any sports teams or anything of the sort that could lead to adopting non-fundamentalist ideas or promote independent thought - they're basically chained to their house and church.

As such it is very unlikely that many of the kids would want to split sooner rather than later. They're brought up to fear and distrust the world and people outside their own little nutty universe and so indoctrinated have little incentive or desire to go out of their safe zone.

I read a few accounts of children who grew up in such families and broke away from them for one reason or another and they have one thing in common - to cut a long story short - they're damaged psychologically, PTSD included.

The first-hand accounts of their world from the "defectors" were fascinating reading for me. Even more so because the more you read about all this the more nagging doubts along the lines of "but maybe it IS as good as it looks" and "but they all look so happy" creep into your mind. But you learn that it's impossible to tell how many of the smiles you see are genuine because the children are taught that it's a sin against God and their family to show unhappiness or heaven forbid anything worse to ANYONE - including their own family. Happy faces are mandatory.

There's plenty of evidence of that right in their own Family Guidelines:

And the latest, expanded version of their "guidelines". This one's precious:

As the original version wasn't enough, they apparently added a failsafe so that they can burrow under the façade that they've forced the children to wear and make them confess any impure thoughts on a daily basis!

Frankly, the twisted perversity of all this is making my head spin. I have to keep reminding myself that these are real people's lives I'm reading about, not some silly social psychology experiment for the textbooks...
