What to put in a Death's Touch War Sword?

I got a bit excited and put the socket into my Death's Touch War Sword. What should I put i it? Maybe an Eth rune for the -25 to target defense? Is it cumulative?
Should I put something else in it? I'm currently only a level 31 barbarian. I've just killed the Shank guy... thing... whatever it is... in act 5 if that matters.
I plan to use the whole Death's set for as long as possible.

Also what would you recommend I put the socket(s) in for my Necromancer once I finally get there. He's only level 25 in the 2nd act ready to go after Duriel. Once I clear out all the "wrong" tombs that is. I always run through the others before doing the "real" tomb for the XP.
What should I try and get to socket?

Is there anything besides a skull that leeches mana? I could really use that

I'd like to keep this one kinda low so I can still use it for other newer toons. Around 31ish or lower if possible.

death's touch sword is pretty poor as far as a weapon goes - it's allright for a bit if you wear all 3 set items for the cold damage that adds, but overall i'd just stick with the gloves and belt and get something else, especially past lvl 30.

That said, a shael rune is never a bad idea for the extra attack speed. probably your best bet if you are looking to up your dps.

At your level, the best weapon you could get is the bonesnap unique maul.
it does 90-172 dmg per hit (109-146 average) and gives 40% chance of Crushing Blow, Cold Resist +30%, Fire Resist +30%.

or just wait till 29 and get a steeldriver great maul, 95 To 203 damage - (120-168 Average) with +40% attack speed.

As for mana leech - The Angelic Halo Amulet and Angelic Ring+ Manald Heal ring are all super cheap.
if you can't find those or trade for them, it shouldn't be too hard to find a rare ring with leech on it.

Also, you might want to go countess running once you get to nm to gather soe runes, there's some fun runewords you can make with not too high runes :

Rhyme(Shael + Eth) in a 2 socket shield is awesome - 20% Increased Chance of Blocking, 40% Faster Block Rate,All Resistances +25,Cannot Be Frozen,50% Extra Gold From Monsters,25% Better Chance Of Getting Magic Items.

Passion (Dol + Ort + Eld + Lem) in any 4 Socket Weapon, gives +25% Increased Attack Speed, +160-210% Enhanced Damage, 50-80% Bonus To Attack Rating, Adds 1-50 Lightning Damage, +1 To Berserk, +1 To Zeal, and some more (less useful) mods.
Depending on the weapon you socket it in, (4socketed phase blade is an idea if you want to go sword + shield) you can make something pretty great here.

    Spirit
(Tal + Thul + Ort + Amn) in a 4socketed shield or sword - gives +2 skills, faster cast rate and resists. not as good for a barbarian, but maybe a nice option if you have a hammerdin or sorceress.

Yup, I'm with xosmi on the Death's set idea. It's fine to start but your dps on that weapon blows after a while.

As for runewords, you can do it if you want, but note that if you are playing single player, which I think you are, you need to enable the ladder runewords mod to make many of the decent ones, including, for example, spirit.

Also, note that if you are making spirit in a shield, you are constrained by the fact that only the heaviest standard shields can take 4 sockets (which is what you need to make the runeword). Thus, your relatively weak caster characters need an impressive investment in strength that they might otherwise prefer to put elsewhere (like, say, vitality) in order to pick up that runeword shield.

Personally, my advice to you is play with what you find and amass a bunch of rares, sets and uniques over your first couple of characters. By the time you are on your third or fourth you will have a sizeable stash of many useful items and can be more specific in your planning. I would not bother socketing anything right now (save all of the rewards, like Charsi's imbues as well) as you are not required to use them). You can wait and use those rewards for items for different characters if you want.

Edit - I just checked and there are only three shields that can take four sockets (and that are not paladin only shields - those shields all can handle four sockets, even at normal level).

Monarch - strength required 156, level requirement 54
Aegis - strength required 219, level requirement 59
Ward - strength required 185, level requirement 63

So, you would need to be in late nightmare at the earliest to find one of those shields (they are all elite items) and you could use a socket quest reward to punch four holes in them (the reward automatically punches the maximum number of sockets into non-magical, non-rare, non-unique, non-set items).

Frankly, it's a great idea to have spirit in a monarch for a number of characters, but that should be something for you to think about in the future.

I do plan on ditching the death's set eventually. Like you said it's good to start out with but it becomes less and less usable as time goes on.
How do I enable the ladder mod?

How will I know if I did it right or not? Am I supposed to get that program window when I start D2? The one shown in the gif provided? And does it matter that I have to run it in windowed mode so I have to have

    -W

    at the end?

you're not supposed to see the window in the gif - it is a properties screen for a shortcut.
after extracting the runewords folder in your diablo2 folder, you need to make a shortcut to diablo 2 (or edit the one you already have) and add -direct -txt to the executable. if you are allready using -w for windowed mode, just add it after that so it becomes. "blahblah/Game.exe"-w -direct -txt
and then set the "start in" field to the new folder you extracted to your diablo 2 directory

Ok cool. I guess I did it right then. It still runs fine so that's a good thing. Lol.
Are they just added rune WORDS? Or does it add some extra runes as well?

Just the words - it basically enables existing runewords that only work on ladder games to work on any game. Adding new runes would be odd.

Not really. It would be like adding stuff from an expansion.

The game has enough runes to keep you occupied. Adding more would unnecessarily complicate things.
