I have a very nice wolf head of balance. It has:

    defense of 10
    +10% faster hit recovery
    +3 to werebear
    +1 to lycanthropy
    +3 to werewolf

It also has 2 sockets that I put into it. Is there a way to increase the defense of it besides El runes?

I don't plan on running through Hell mode so the really high end stuff, if any, won't do me any good.

the following horadric cube recipes might help - i'm unsure if a helmet also counts as a piece of armor, or if they wil only work on body armor, you'll just have to try.

1 Ort Rune + 1 Amn Rune + 1 Perfect Sapphire + Normal (Basic) Rare Weapon = Exceptional Rare Weapon
    The item type is upgraded.

1 Ko Rune + 1 Pul Rune + 1 Perfect Amethyst + Exceptional Rare Armor = Elite Rare Armor
    The item type is upgraded.

otherwise, editing the item in a 3rd party program like hero editor is the only other way i know of.

The armor recipe didn't work so I'll have to poke around in the hero editor and see if I can figure it out. :thanks:

I'm guessing based on its name and the fact that you could put two sockets in it that the helmet you have is a regular magic one (blue colored) rather than a rare (yellow) or unique (gold-ish). If so, there are no recipes to upgrade from normal to exceptional or from exceptional to unique. The cube recipes only work for rares or uniques in that regard.

ah, right you are - i completely disregarded the name and assumed it was a rare.
afaik there is no way to turn a magic item into a rare in-game though, at least not while keeping the same mods on it it has now.
