Strange graphical error (spell animations)

    [IMG] Me again! :D

I don't know how common this problem is, but's it's dreadfully annoying.

Certain spell effects in the game are causing a strange, loud, slowdown effect, of the sort that every time it happens makes me worry that my computer is about to crash. The best example for this is when I'm in the Tomb of the Nameless One in the drowned nations.

    * spoiler - of sorts *

Whenever the lightening strike hits me (to kill me) the animation slows down to about 1 frame per second, as does the sound file, and the entire area of the screen where the animation takes place (in a large rectangular block) stretches and is blurred, as well as the character portraits down below.

This happened a few other times outside this tomb, and they were all with large-scale spell animations. I didn't think much of them at the time, as I thought they were a minor glitch that happens from time to time with IE games. One thing of note is that this never happened to me the first time I played through the game, and I'm using the same game CDs. But there are a few differences:

1 - Here are my current (relevant) system specs:
    • AMD Athlon 64 3ghz
    • nVidia 5900xt 256mb
    • 1.5g RAM
    • Windows XP (w/ service pack 2)
    • latest nVidia driver updated
    2 - I've installed the following mods/extras:
    • Platter's fix pack
    • Added armors
    • Cities explored
    • The Candlestick Quest
    • Restoration Pack
Also of note is that this is the 2-CD version of Torment, which already came patched to Version 1.1.

So the question I pose to the PS:T brain trust is: What the dilly?

    Thanks in advance.

I have the same error. I get odd , rectangular distortions when spells are cast. My FPS doesn't go down , but its damn annoying and ugly to see spell affects go all crazy like that. Back when I played this game with my Geforce 2 MX 400 I didn't get this error.

    Try older graphics card drivers.

Go into display properties. There, go to the tab settings, and click on advanced. Go to the tab troubleshooting and slide the graph acceleration back till it says most directx accelerations are turned off. This might fix it, since it does fix some graph bugs in bg1.

Ditto the above and/or: run > dxdiag > display > directX features > directdraw acceleration > disable. Also disable direct3d.

If sound is part of the issue, you may also try disabling directX hardware acceleration under the sound tab.
