    What do all those candlebras(with beams connectiong each other) do? And what happens when you do cast a protection spell before you face him? I'm a monk, so I can't cast it...

    What do you mean you can't cast it? If you cast the other fire spell to summon him, you can cast the spell of protection as well.

    If you are protected when you summon him, you can talk to him and get his side of the story.

    I cast Burning Hands with the wand I found in a shelf about 3 rooms away.

    That wand has the Protection spell on it as well.
    You just have to select it

    IIRC, there's a different wand for the protection spell, but it's found in there somewhere.

    In one of the rooms you will find Protection from alignment wand. Cast prot. from evil before facing Belial, and get his version of story. This is the only right way to finish this quest.

    Oh, drat! I already gave the judgement in favor of the Lich guy, and now the town is burning and the mayor is furious with me(his ghost)
