Ranger Multi?

Discussion in 'Neverwinter Nights (Classic)' started by ywpark89, Jun 25, 2002.

I'm about to have NWN delivered, and I was wondering about what class I should play. I have in my mind a ranger as a starting class, but I would like to choose to be multiclass. I'm specifically wondering about either a Ranger/Fighter, or a Ranger/Rouge/Fighter. I'm going for the fighter for dicipline and feats, but I've heard that rouge is good too. any Ideas?

Ranger/Rogue is difficult, for you need STR, DEX, CON and WIS for a Ranger and DEX, INT and maybe CHA for a Rogue. So you will have to spread your stats quite a bit.

Ranger/Fighter is a good choice. You get the cool rangerfeats and on top of that the lot of fighterfeats. Just make sure you wear light armor, or they won't work (the rangerfeats).

I don't think it matters much with what class you start. Take the one with the most skillpoints I would say.

Further I'd suggest to take at least 6 levels of Ranger, so you get an Animal Companion and at least 4 levels of Fighter for Weapon Specialisation.

    Got more questions? :)

Should I start with fighter or ranger first? And what kit(if any) should I take?

Kit is only for recommended options. There's absolutely no difference between them, except if you click the 'recommended' button.
So just choose what sounds cool.

The only thing I can think of is that if you choose a fighter kit, you choose one that is not depending on heavy armor, for lots of ranger stuff doesn't work when you wear medium or heavy armor.

Further, it doesn't really matter with what class you start in this case. Choose the class with the most skillpoints per level I would say, for you get 4 times as much at level 1. But I don't know by heart if there's a difference.

If you want to multi to rogue, there's a big difference (a rogue get LOTS of skillpoints), but for ranger and fighter it doesn't matter (much).

Also you get max hitpoints at level 1, but a fighter and ranger both have a d10 as hitdie.

Normally a ranger already has a good Dexterity so that is good for multiclassing with a rogue. The problem is that a ranger already is a good fighter but with 2 weapons and light armor usually. You have the same base attacks etc as a ranger so the only good thing are the bonus feats you get. The good thing of a rogue is that you can do Sneak Attacks. Mind that you should be of the human race for this multiclassing, else you get a 20& XP-penalty forever.

A Ranger/Rogue would make a good multiclass I think. I've thought about it, but so far I'm a level 5 pure Ranger. STR and CON can be somewhat neglected (I believe I started with 14 and 10 respectively), and you only need 14 WIS to cast your maximum level spells. I actually started with 16 INT to get the extra skill points.

And Headbanger, you can be a Human, Half-Elf or Halfling and not suffer any XP-penalty with a Ranger/Rogue with levels farther than 1 apart, and any race if you keep them within 1 of eachother.

Try my combo. I have a Ranger 1/Paladin 2/ Wizard x, which will probably be 17. I get level 9 spells, dualweld, and immunity to disease. Sure, I may get hit with xp penalties(I can't really tell) but seeing as how I'm a half-elf, I don't care.

What about a ranger barbarian mix? Rage and dualweld? Heh heh... heh heh...

No, you won't get XP penalties, the Wizard will be your favored class (which means it doesn't count) and your Ranger and Paladin classes are within 1 of eachother.

I have been playing a Ranger/Rogue and I find it a decent class combination. There are fewer feats to choose from in NWN than in AD&D, and I find that the extra skills are better than feats. Plus the Rogue gets the Sneak Attack bonus which can help. It even applies to missile weapons if you have the feat Point Blank Shot.

Yeah, the reduced number of feats in the game does a lot to narrow the supposed power gap between rangers and fighters in the rules. Search, Spot, and Listen are very valuable in this game and they are class skills for rangers.

I was originally going to play a pure fighter in ALFA, but based on my experiences in the campaign game, I'll play a Fighter/Ranger. That should produce a very versatile and effective warrior.

I've also heard that for 2-weapon fighting, the style which reduces the penalties the most is the 2 feats, and a 'light' weapon in the off-hand. So what is 'light weapon'? Maybe instead of 2 scimitars, I should take rapier and weap . finense...

A 'light' weapon means it's one class smaller then you are.

A human, dwarf, elf, half-elf and half-orc are medium sized, so all small and tiny weapons are considered light.

A gnome and halfling are small sieze, so all tiny weapons are light to them.

Small includes the short sword and rapier.
    Tiny includes dagger and kama.

The main hand weapon may be medium or light.

As far as I can tell, you can *only* equip light weapons in your off hand in NWN. Either that, or I was doing something wrong when I was trying out different options. But it definitely rejected the medium weapons I tried putting in the shield slot on my half orc.

Anyway, regardless of that issue, you are always better off using a 'light' weapon unless the magical mods on your heavy alternative are really neato-keen. The average damage difference between a medium weapon and a light one is only 1 (2 at the most) pts per hit. The additional hit frequency of the light weapon should easily make that up in most circumstances and can be crucial against high AC targets.

It doesn't seem to consider rapiers as light.

When I equip my longsword and handaxe, dagger or shortsword then examine my character sheet, I get the same attack bonus for each hand, but if I equip a rapier in the off-hand, my attack bonuses are smaller for each hand.

iirc, only a short sword belongs to the Small Weapons, a Rapier is Medium. Not totally sure but I thought that was the reason that my Ranger in D&D has a Short Sword and not a Rapier in my off hand. To be sure, check the Equipment chapter in the D&D PHB.

Rapier's are light, so you can weapon finess them.

But they're not small, so you can't use them as your off-hand weapon without penalties.

The rules are a big confusing in this regard, unless you're specifically looking for it.

I don't think you are supose to be able to do this but I have a lev 8 Ranger that uses 2 Long swords.
there doesn't appear to be any penility for it which may be a glich.. I get +7 for both hands..
I was using Long sword / Rapier with finese but the + on the Rapier is only 1 higher so i had +7/+8 then that for a second long sword so I opted for the Dmg of the long sword.
(note my char is a half elf with long sword profeciency also)
I've never really played 3rd addition AD&D but in 2nd Addition this wasn't allowed. So i'm not sure if it is just a glich.
or maybe i'm just reading the info on the char sheet wrong :p
at any rate i use 2 long swords and it works good for me.

No, that's correct. As long as your Ranger is wearing light armor, you gain the Ambidexterity and Two-Weapon Fighting feats, so your attack bonus will be the same for both hands. The catch is if you change out that rapier or longsword for a small weapon (eg. dagger, handaxe or shortsword) you'll get +9 instead of +7 on each of your hands.
