[IMG] You had me worried this morning Tal! I connect to SP and I get this message saying this site is not aligned with our network usage rules. What?! I've been cut off?!

But then I realized it was only the popup. What's on the popup Tal? Some porno site? ;)

[IMG] Pop-Up Adds on Sorcerer's Place!?!?

That's it, final straw. I'm out of here. My addiction is broken, my cravings are gone, I will never walk these hollowed halls again.

Yeah right. :D :p That would be like a chain smoker saying that the Surgeon General's warning on his cartons of Camel Unfiltered will deter him from smoking. :D

Tal- whatever it takes to keep the doors open, count me in!

Yeah pop-ups are no big deal. As long as Sorcerer's Place remains! :)

  4. That was nothing, can't say I found that irritating at all

[IMG] May I introduce myself? I am the one responsible for the popups. Rendelius from RPGDot.com, running the network. Paying all the bills :)

I do not like popups at all, but it was necessary. Normally I pay about 100$ for the server. This month it will be about 400-450. I had the choice to either do something against that or to stop hosting other sites for free. Donations didn't drop in like expected, so I decided to use popups. I am sorry for that, but we have no other choice to keep this network running, since you can't live from normal ads nowadays. It's bandwidth that costs so much, the server we are running is a good deal. Currently, the network is using about 7 GB a day, and we are allowed 3GB. Every GB above that costs 3 bucks.

Sorcerers.net is our biggest hosted site, even bigger than ours. It is responsible for a lot of bandwidth consumption (in fact, the UBB is the most bandwidth intense here).

Once again I apologize for having this site carrying popups. But it is necessary...

I hope the popups help. One of my clients made her chat site profitable with one "line of business"- she allowed people to put a picture of up to 50 kb on their profile page and charged them a monthly membership fee for that privilege. Other users didn't pay a cent. The response was incredible! Just another option to consider...

And hey! I'll bet if there were Sorcerer's Place t-shirts we'd all buy one! Aaah, ever the marketing consultant... :)

I'm starting to get the hand of these popups. I always manage to close them while the titlebar still says "about:blank" ;)

Ok, I'm a bit late but Rend filled you all in. And no, as far as I can tell, there's been no direct porn on them yet. (None that I've seen anyway, but there was a link to "Adult" material on one which could have caused the block at BTA's.)
It seems most are about home employment...

Well, actually if you close them before they fully display, they don't pay a cent...

[IMG] I just logged on this morning and when I went to the Boards I noticed a pop-up on the main message topic page and on each forum page. Tal, are they putting the squeeze on you over the website? I'm just concerned these new pop-ups are a response to growing cash needs for the site. How are things? Should we expect any other new changes along these lines?

Well if it pays money to support our bandwith when we let the pop-ups display fully. Then I am entering ClickOrama-mode. :D

Bring'em on. I prefer a straight click instead of this sneaking around.

    [IMG] Hey All.

Sorry this thread has gone on for so long without me noticing it.

Ok, here's the deal. This is the NEW version of the pop-up on the front page as you've known it before. The difference now is that it is currenty on the front page and on all forum pages. BUT - and here's the important bit - it comes with a cookie. This cookie is installed on your computer and will only let you see one pop-under every 12 hours. It's a bargain compared to the old every-time-I-load-a-page one. They are the same on the front page and on the boards, and any subsequent pages I'll put it on.

So it's important for you to have cookies enabled. This way you'll only see one pop-under every 12 hours. And I think I'm not asking too much of you if I request that you let it load fully when you see it. That's the least you can do for our host which provides us with the server we're on.

If anyone has any more questions, feel free to ask...

[IMG] Whatever Tal. As long as the show goes on...

    /me creates a new spell "Pop-ups tolerance"

Hmmm, don't think it'll be needed, but just in case... ;)

[IMG] Tal, thanks for the update. I guess every 12 hours is not a big deal, but alas I can't use cookies on my work system. I'll deal if I know everyone else will avoid "The attack of the killer pop-ups". And after they load I'll just close them all down. At least they are not the painful ones that open a new window when you close the first one. :(

Well as an alternative I could log all IP addresses and the time in our mySQL database. Basically it does the same then as the cookie file and I think it's even faster as well. It uses your IP address so if you are on a dial-up modem, it will still load everytime you hit one of the pages. But it will do so only once.
And if you are worried about storing your IP adrress then know that they are logged anyway for the page counter and this bulletin board.
