Are we better off without the level system?

[IMG] I think it is sad that Taluntain's great work in making us a levelstatus is beeing abused.
It is a great system. But as of late I have seen a escalating amount of Spamming on the sorcerors sites. Is this just a minor lapse or is it a growing problem? Do You think that we eventually would have to settle with no levelmarker? Or would this place die out without this amazingly fun gadget?

this level system mularkey is maybe a waste of time.

who really cares how many times they've posted?

I think it a great idea. I think it adds that unique touch to the site and i think Tal is a genius for thinking it up.

I also think that the spamming problem should not be solved by getting rid of the system. Just block the serial spammers and don't let it spoil our fun. That is what i think anyway.

Far too many thinks in there me thinks!

This system was made up just because the users wanted it, FYI.

And there won't be any more spamming going on here. I made sure of that, and will in the future with a more... direct approach. No more Mr. Nice Guy. Some hard-core idiots just don't respond to it.

I think it's a fine system, lets you see who's the forum junkies around here ;)

For the newcomers that post crap all over, to improve their avatar (or what it is), well, I can't say I pity them for being banned, it's just a shame that a few can screw it up for the others, but again, that is the way of life.

Personally, I dont think much about the avatar or post-count, but some probably do, and then we should let them have their fun =)

well im a seasoned veteran of these boards and i think that the systm should be scrapped in the whatnots forum but left enabled in all the other forums because most of the spammin happens here, therefore remove the reaosn to spam and the spammin stops. simple.

Just to put that I disagree with herf.

Most spamming is done on BG2 forum so close that forum. Why?

The main reason there is a BG2 solution here on Sorcerers' (mega credits to Syl for that). Almost all questions can be answered by simply reading it.

I must admit I wasn't too excited by the introduction of the multi-levels and didn't think it would affect me. However, now they are here I have to say I think differently. They do add a bit of character to the board while avoiding all the slow-loading personal pictures and signatures (the main reason Tal was asked to implement them I think). They (to my surprise) do give you a nice feeling when you 'level up.' Also they provide a practical benefit as they make it easier to find peoples commenst when scanning through posts searching for info.

So, to summarise my waffle, I reckon we should keep them, they are a good thing.

As for spamming, well it spoils the boards when it gets silly but, if we start changing and getting rid of features we like just to deal with spammers, then they have still spoiled the boards. Tal's way of dealing with it - ask nicely and refer to FAQ, get sarcastic and refer to FAQ, then ban - seems pretty good to me. I'd hate for it to become an instant ban site. I imagine it would be unpleasant for the moderators to ban people (like firing someone) regularly. At the end of the day we all want to enjoy our time here - owner, moderators, veterans and newbies.

[IMG] I try not to spam, i really do. But even when i post my honest opinion, or give sound advice, I have been acused of spamming. I only post when i have something to say, or i think it will be terribly halarius. I dont care if I stay at my level forever, It is not who i am. and I judge not by your status, but by your comments. I also dont think that just because a post is short, it is spam. I can give very exact directions to something in just 2 lines. Or I can talk all day about the weather(this is known by some). thank you.

    Extremist-
Closing the BG2 forum will mean:

    • You can no longer ask someones opinion on an event.
    • You can no longer get tactics for a certain enemy with a certain PC or party.
    • You cannot get read of experiences other players have had, granted there are a lot there already, but if I wanted to know about someones experience against a <insert hostile here> and it wasn't on the forum, then you can't enjoy it.
    • I am sure that there is some stuff that hasn't been posted on the forum and is not in the walkthrough. So the forum will be useful for a while to come.

Well, back on topic, I am still against the avatars and ever since I came back, I have told Tal that I want to get rid of mine, I got the next best thing though (check post count).

And if you really want to, you can delete my avatar.

      Just my 2 cents.

To close a forum might me an extreme measure! And I dont think this is the goal of the moderators. For me is unthinkable.
As for the avatar system, I dont know how to say it, but it creates a lot of rubbish in most of the boards. Still this place is one of the "clearest" on the Web (congrats and thanks to the moderators!).
I dont think the people really interested and loving the board did pay much attention about the avatars.Suppose mostly banished from other boards are greedy quickly to "establish" themselves. I look at them only when I read a really stupid post to make a guess about the poster.

NO-ONE SAID ANYTHIGN ABOUT CLOSING A BOARD! EXTREMEIST TOOK IT THE WRONG WAY AND THOUGHT THAT IT WAS MEANT THAT THE BOARD SHOULD BE CLOSED, WHAT WAS ACTUALLY MEANT WAS THAT THE LEVELLING SYSTEM SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM THE FORUM WITH THE HIGHEST SPAM COUNT TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF SPAMMERS!

herf, read the FAQ about cap posts

    Quote:
Do not post your subject lines or messages in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS. This is hard on the eyes and annoying to read. Posts with more than two question (?) or exclamation (!) marks also fall under this category.

Great! Instead of flaming each other because we think the other person is an idiot, we now flame each other because we all think the others don't know how to behave on these boards. :)

Edit: Better add a smiley to that.

I dunno about spaming...I'm a new comer, and I made a BUNCH of replies the first 2 days just because this is a great board, there where alot of interesting topics, and all of it was new to me. I could give a damn about what my little icon happens to be, although I do think it's a cool feature.
And, yeah, alot of people don't know how to act on a message board. That doesn't always mean that they're jerks, some of us just honestly don't know any better.
I havent posted on any message boards since the BBS days of the late 80's. This is the first one I've found where people seemed interested in doing more than flaming each other. Ya'll have a great thing going but thats no reason to think that everyone who makes a Faux pa is jerk who needs to go away
