anyone like classical music?

Just curious if it is as unpopular as I expect.

If there are any enthusiasts,
who is your favorite composer?
what is your favorite piece?
when was the last time you went to a live concert?
who did you hear?
and
do you have a favorite artist/group?

 

Franz Schubert (esp. Winterreise), Johann Sebastian Bach, some Renaissance stuff.
I have no favorite artist. Like to play it myself with violin or voice.

Classical music isn't all that unpopular.

I wouldn't call myself a classical music freak, but I do enjoy listening to it occasionally. I own 10 odd cds of assorted classical music. Mozart / Beethoven are my favourite composers. I just with they'd given their stuff more memorable titles... I don't even know the names of my favourite pieces... My favourite Mozart piece is the one used in the opening scene of the movie Amadeus, and my favourit Beethoven piece would probably be the last bit of Ode to Joy.

I've never been to a concert... I'm not sure a classical concert would be my thing.

 

i sometimes enjoy classical music.
no favorite composer though. here are some that i like.

i like beethoven's 9th symphony, simply because:
1. it is from a bird's call (meadow lark... i think).
2. he was completely deaf when he composed it.

one of the "four seasons" by vivaldi (which season? i'm not sure which one it is).

giuseppe tartini's "the devil's trill", very intriguing. he claims that he was trying to duplicate from one of his dream. his dream was that he asked the devil to play him a song, and it was so awesome that he tried to replicate it when he woke up... but didn't come close.

william tell's overture is probably the most popular to me.

 

By no means an expert here, but there are some works out there that make me reconsider the notion that man, at bottom, has no more worth than a dead dog.

Top three for me:

Brahms ( Symphony no. 1 )
Tchaikovsky ( Symphony no. 6 )
Beethoven ( Symphony no. 9 )

 

I only like Japanese classical.

 

I listen to Beethoven and Mozart.

 

I mostly listen to classical.

Favorite composers would be Bach, Telemann, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, and all the Russian composers from the mid-1800's on. And Gershwin.

 

I like Bach, Mozart, Handel, Hydan(sp?), Vivaldi and Brahams. I wouldn't say that I have a favorite symphony, and I have not been to a concert in a while. The last concert I went to was the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

 

I used to listen to quite a bit of classical music when I was still in University. I found it was very relaxing to listen to while studying. also used to listen to it a fair bit just for recreation. Unfortunately, a whole slew of my CDs were stolen a few years ago, including all of my classical music. I'm still slowly rebuilding after that disasterous event. I find it very difficult to find not only the pieces of composers I like, but to find good compositions and/or performances. It really makes difference to hear a good performance of a piece over a medicore or bad performance.

My favourite composer would probably be Vivaldi: I really like the intricacies of his concertos (better than the four seasons, actually). In general I prefer Barouqe violin and strings to others, although Chopin is very nice as is Beethoven.

It's been quite a while since I've been to a performance. When I was younger (and still playing in various orchestra's) I used to go to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra quite often, as well as other performances. The last thing I went to see that was even close would have been an opera performance (The Man of La Mancha I think) a couple of years ago.

 

I enjoy almost all classical music. Lately I've been listening to a lot of Janacek, Sibelius, Holmboe and Spohr. I go to about 10 concerts a year--especially chamber music. My last concert featured the Emerson String Quartet. If you have any mathematical inclination (and most computer enthusiasts do) try a string quartet. Schubert's "Death and the Maiden" is fnatastic.

I used to play the violin but then I stopped when I realized how horrible it sounded. I suppose you could call Classical music, Throw Yourself off the Cliff music.

John Williams (trendy, but who cares!)

George Winston (or is that instrumental? Is there a difference?)

 

I guess you could say I like classical music, but I wouldn't call myself an "enthusiast."

The last concert I went to (actually, the only classical concert I've *ever* been to) was three years ago, when I went with my music class to listen to Canadian Brass.

Faerus: Goldsmith is one of my favorite movie composers. There is a new guy I love(can't remember his name)who used to be in the band Oingo Boingo that is writing great stuff for movies.

Sir Belisarius: Since you like epic, have you ever listened to Bruckner??

I'm going to try and not be insulted by lady lou's comment about the violin (I play the violin)

I neglected to mention some of my fav's:
1. any Opera by Strauss
2. Josh Bell is my fav living instrumentalist
3. Grumiaux is my fav all around violinist

it's hard to pick just one piece...

Oh, if you really want to rock check out the Rite of Spring by Stravinsky. It's even more tribal than Carmina Burana (MTThomas and the BostonSO is a great recording)

Bleh. I like some of that oldie stuff, but I'm more of a Johnny W man. The theme from Schindler's List gets me going every time.

Oh, and more recently, I am partial to a bit of Howard Shore.

I'm not a fan of classical music on it's own, however I sometimes listen to Bach, Mozart, Beethoven or Vivaldi but that doesn't happen often.

I do like classical music though, when it is combined with rock/metal. I have many cd's of metal/rockbands that have combined classical music with fast music:

- Rhapsody: fast epicmetal with choirs and classical instruments
- Trans Seberian Orchestra with Savatage: Beethoven's last night. Beethoven's famous music in a modern rock-jacket.
- Nightwish: Opera with metal and also classical instruments.
- Avantasia: Opera Metal
- Within Temptation: Gothic Rock with classical effects.

 

I'm not a big fan of classical music, but sometimes it's nice to listen to in the background when doing something else.

I can't exactly pick a favorite piece, but I like a few more than others. Among them:

William Tell Overture (I think it was Tchaikovsky)
Most of Mozart's pieces
Beethoven 3rd, 7th, and 9th

 

I am not exactly as fan of classical music, either, but I do enjoy listening it, thanks to my father. I do not have a favourite composer, except for John Williams...

I prefer opera, and La Donna e Mobile (Correct me if I wrote it worng) is my favourite piece, and has been so ever since I can remember.

I do not actively listen to classicals musiv that much, except at nights when my fave radio station plays miscellaneous classical music... it is quite refreshing.

I, too, like classical music mixed with metal, like Headbanger, especially Nightwish.
