[IMG] Anyone else had a problem using the Vhailor's Helm Simulacrum ability?

Every time I've tried it, all I get is a Minsc (or Mazzy) "Save v. Death" message then nothing?

    What is up with that!?

I have only tried using it on my main character and never had any problems.

As an aside - don't forget to put on a decent helmet again after you have cast the spell.

PS I just has a quick 'search' to see if there was any other reference to the bug. All i found was someone saying he has heard a rumour that it didn't work. No specifics though sorry.

PPS final obvious thought hits me (oww) there is a limit to how many creatures you can summon at once (5 I think of the top of my head). Have you got other summoned creatures about when you try to use the helm?

It works for me, I have my replacement Inquisitor wear it and use it all the time - it can be very useful to have 2 holy avengers +5 in the party! ;)

    Slappy,

I thought you had to be wearing the helmet for the simulacrum effect to work? Why would I need another good helmet to put on? Doesn't the simulacrum character also have the helm's benefits minus of course an additional simulacrum ability? I wouldn't know since I've never got the darned thing to work.

As for the summoning monsters max, I've only ever tried it without any other monsters present, so the 5 max figure never was a concern.

    Help!

[IMG] Aferon, you're using so called BonusCD or you cheated inventory - that Helmet is not an obtainable issue in core game. Anyway, have you installed official patch?
If you installed it, I don't expect anyone can help you on the whole thing - take it as a bug and forget about it.

What an originality from BI to put Vhailor's Helm in BG2. LOL, that particular NPC had the worst AC... What about his axe?

It is because you are normally allowed a save when a spell is cast on you and that is what is happening. However when you cast a friendly spell on your party you normally do not use the saving throw. The helmet was bugged in the original game and thus you had the saving throw which caused it to "misfire". AFAIK this was fixed with the official patch. Did you have that installed?

Aferon de Caland to answer your query to me. Why I said to have antoher helmet handy is because the Vhailor's Helm has no real benefits other than the cast Simulacrum (which is very useful when it works). However, you only need to wear the helm when you cast the spell. So what I do is:

    - wear a good helemet normally, in my case, the Helm of Balduran which improves my armour class and THACO
    - when I need Simulacrum I swap the Helm of Balduran for the Helm of Vhailor
    - cast the spell
    - swap back to the Helm of Balduran and its benefits.

The Simulacrum copy of me carries on OK even though the original me is no longer wearing the Helm. I hope that is clear - it's just a bit of a cheat I guess.

PS if you haven't installed the official patch then I agree with others here do so it might help. You can get it from this site's BG2 section:

I don't consider that a cheat. You use an item to cast a spell and then equip another item.

What could have been implemented is to disallow changing helmets in battle - the same as with armor - but you could still use Vhailor's Helm spell before going into battle.

Errr, today in the chatroom I was involved in both sided annoying talk with septic again  ;)

But when I was checking on his new(bie) questions I spot one thing - that there is a Vhailor's Helm correction in override folder (file: WA2HELM.ITM)!?

I looked upon it a bit and found this if I delete the file (and used the console to create it, of course):
The helm casts Simulacrum only if one the spell is casted upon fails to make a saving throw against Paralyze/Poison/Death. And that would happen in very rare occasions...

With the file on it's place (patch installed) the helm worked every time.

So, ppl, if you're into that bonusCD business, do install an OFFICIAL patch because without it the helm will often fail to work.

    P.S. Thanks Septic! :D
