[IMG] I had myself (PC paladin with Carsomyr+5), Minsc with Psion's Blade+5, and Anomen with (edit)Runehammer+5 (for the Negative Plane Protection) get at him from different angles (me in front, Anomen on the side, Minsc behind him),
and Jahiera at the back ready to give healing spells or Negative Plane Protection (because either one of the Marileths or the Demogorgon could level drain...it happend to me the first time when I failed, but not the 2nd time when I killed them) and Aarie and Imoen casting Breach and Peirce Magic on the Demogorgon and on the Marileth.

I assume you might have found a couple of Spellstrike wands, and I suggest you have one handy during this fight. You might need to cast Breach/Pierce Magic more than once for the Demogorgon alone.

Keep at least 5 Superior Healing potions and 5 Extra Healing potions for each of your fighters that you send to the battle, and have someone/anyone in your party with a Rod of Ressurection, just in case. I needed one for my PC because the Demogorgon and a Marileth were doing a number on me at the same time, and I didn't have time enough to quaff enough potions to make me safe, so the Rod of Ressurection *really* came in handy for me, as I was recharged to full and then we took out both the Demogorgon and the Marileth.

If you have Aarie in your party (or even Anomen as a Cleric, as opposed to a frontline fighter), cast Greater Malison (Anomen doesn't have that spell so get a mage to do it), and after Greater Malison is cast, throw down as many Holy Smites as you can. They really do a number on those foul demons. They have good Magic Resistances, thats why Greater Malison's are needed.

Edit: I forgot to add, before the fight, cast Chaotic Commands on everyone, summon a good deva/planetar, chant, protection from evil 10radius, and bless. And have Negative Plane Protection ready.

If you have high lvl mages, you can also use Pierce Shield and that resistance lowering spell.
I removed all of his protective magics and buffed my party to the max, whacking the beast to death.
I suggest using any possible weapons which have +3 atleast, IIRC he was immune to below.

Or you can lure the Marileths out and slay them out of the sight of the Demogorgon. But i'm ot sure if it summons any more of them.
Just remember to spare extra Breach etc. protection removal and If you have any HLA's on your mages/figters, use them. Critical Strike, Greater Whirlwind + haste etc etc.

Dragon Breath is good for separating the marileths from the Demogorgon IIRC.

but most of all, use ALL your possible buffs to the party, then charge. Either Lure, or straighton front attack. AND dont forget to use Fodder (Monster summons, Summon undead if onver 15 lvl mages, and most of all, MORDEKAINEN'S Swords and a Planetar to heal or buff)

    That's how I vanquished it :)

Cheesy way: lay a number of traps with your thief where he'll spawn

Fair fight way: Generally i just keep mages in the back ready to cast breach and pierce magic and stuff. Have a deva/planetar/any other decent summon to hold the balors/mariliths/glabrezu/whatever at bay. When he has no defences left, have all fighters gang up on him with greater whirlwinds. He should fall quite fast then.

Well I had the improved version and it was quite togh. he summoned like hell, killed like hell and his global spells were disrupting my spellcasters.

Then I realized khelbens warding whip does wonders against his protection. It took Imoen's and Aerie's full Abi-Dazim and Comet arzenal (and Viccy's holy smites as well as spells of simulacrums) to keep all the demons around at bay (well, this means only a half of them was attacking my front liners).
Then in the hardest point, when my bashers were actualy beating DG, someone stunned all my spellcasters and started to chunk them (there was nobody to defend them when Keldorn died). I managed to kill demogorgon, but had only badly beaten Jaheira (her staff of ram eventualy saved me) and my fighter left. So I had them running all around the place and killing lone fiends when convenient.
Meanwhile Imoen and Aerie fell and helpless Viconia started to get it as well. But I was lucky and the remaining two got there in time for the price of Jaheira's life.
And the biggest luck was that Viconia (when she shook off the paralysis) had mass raise dead memorized and nobody was beaten beyond reassurection...

You don't need to fight him. He falls to four spike traps but set a fifth just to make sure. I don't see that there's anything wrong with this: using your rogue's high level traps is fundamentally no different to using your mage's high level spells - you're just using the different strengths of your NPCs.

If you want to feel as though you've properly earned your 100,000 quest XP per person, that's a diferent matter. He is a tough SOB. Chaotic Commands needs to be cast on everybody (Demogorgon's gaze causes insanity). There's no harm in casting Protection From Evil, 10' Radius either. Summon help: low-level summons are worthless, but planetars are elemental princes are not. Some form of negative plane protection helps greatly as well because some his summons have level drain capability. The spell doesn't last long enough so use items and weapons which have the capability, the Amulet of Power, Improved Mace of Disruption, ugraded Runehammer, Spectral Brand and Angurvadal. The Answerer longsword is good to reduce his AC and magic resistance. Armour of Faith and Draw Upon Holy Might are well worth casting to give you an extra edge. When he goes red concentrate all your attacks on him. Greater Whirlwind may be the most effective HLA as you need to kill him quickly. Ignore his summoned demons for the moment - they'll hurt you, sure, but they shouldn't kill you. The longer he lives, the more help he summons, and you don't want that. Do NOT gate in any demonic assistance yourself - you'll just end up fighting them. A mage should be using a breaching wand as fast as Demogorgon gets his defenses up. If you find that weapons are having no effect on the Prince of Demons himself, briefly turn your attention to other enemies. until a mage can fire off a breach spell. Warding Whip is quite a good spell as it removes magic defences over several rounds. Use a couple of doses of Lower Resistance (his MR is 90%) and then hit him with spells which do magic or acid damage (he has 100% fire and lightning resistance and 50% cold resistance). His save vs. magic is 6; one does of Greater Malison makes it 10 (add Doom to make it 12) and then take advantage of it - a failed save against Horrid Wilting will hurt him plenty. Improved Alacrity followed by every single Magic Missile and Acid Arrow that you can cast may be quite effective too. Do NOT use Time Stop as Demogorgon is immune and you don't want to have Imoen or Edwin face him alone. When Demogorgon falls, you'll certainly have several other powerful demons to tackle. The Mariliths are particularly irksome with their Stoneskin and Protection From Magic Weapons spells.

Now leave Watcher's Keep and forgive the Knights of the Vigil for 50,000 quest XP each (you can still be suitably stern). Killing them, satisfying as it is, nets you 70,000 XP altogether.

I find that Demogorgon as standard is more than tough enough. I wouldn't install the mod that makes him even harder.

Question - since all his minions are summoned, if you cast a Death Spell will it instantly kill all his summoned creatures as it would with any other summons? Seems logical enough.

No, death spell is a waste. Demons are gated in, not summoned (you'll recall that death spell has no effect on demons gated in by liches and the like). Although they may appear without the usual gate animation, they are gated nevertheless.

    Other questions...

I can't remember whether or not Greater Malison stacks. Does it?

I need weapon recommendations. +5 or better to hit him, right? I was hoping it was +4 or better.

Is there any missile weapon good against him? Gesen bow seems to be the only one I can think of.

@ Death Rabbit - I'm pretty sure it's +4 to hit, in which case, yes Gesen will hit, provided you don't equip arrows of +3 or less enchantment with it.

If Greater Malison ever stacked, I think it's probably been fixed away. I believe that GM and Doom DO stack, however.

Demogorgon can be hit by +4 weapons (+3? not sure). Don't use Gesen bow - he's immune to lightning. Bullets +4 will work, but only the Sling Of Seeking wielded by a very strong character would have a significant impact. The Answerer will wittle away both his magic resistance and armour class, while Soul Reaver (if you have anybody who can wield it) will negatively impact his ability to hurt you back. Carsomyr should keep knocking his physical protections down (although I've not verified that this works; even if it doesn't, Carsomyr is still a good choice as he's chaotic evil). Blasting away with Keldorn's dispel magic ability is almost certainly a bad idea as it will remove your own buffs and you do not want to try fighting him without Chaotic Commands.

It took a couple wacks, but yes, Carsomyr does dispel alot too. Nevertheless, still use a wand of spellstrike (Breach/Peirce Magic) for good measure!

    Hi,

the most effective and the easiest way is: forget abaut all strategies, forget about all buffs and summons, forget about your party. Think simple.

Take a high level Paladin (Keldorn or even better your PC Cavalier), equip him with Carsomyr, give him the ring of free action and all items, which grant MR and place Imoen or any other mage outside the arena in a corner. Let the rest of your party standing apart on the stairs, having a cup of tea or something like that.

When Demogorgon shows up, let Imoen cast a breach, and then watch your Paladin hacking Demogorgon with Greater Whirlwind and Carsomyr into pieces in...let's say...50 seconds....?

I do this over and over again on the highest difficulty without any problems, just have to do my Laying Hands in cause of the mariliths.

Demogorgon is not tough, he is completly underpowered...

    @Bang
Yeah with that kind of tactic, Try different one to increase difficulty or...brace yourself... install Ascension -mod, it enchances the DG to it's original strenght (which bioware had to reduce since the general difficulty was near impossible due to certain *things*).
I haven't yet tried the enchanced one, but the normal took a couple of test reloads, and then Got it off pretty easily. I concenrated to disabling its fearsome defences.. Somehow got to distinguish that "fire" shield it had, can't remember the name :)

For the record, Demogorgon is immune to +2 and below weapons, Sarevok's Deathbringer assault, backstabs, time stop, charm, panic, poison, sleep, stun, slay, feeblemind, disease, hold, confusion, petrification, polymorph, imprisonment, maze, level drain, teleport field, wing buffet (Ring and Staff of Ram effects), disintegrate, level one and two spells. Tack on resistances of 100% fire and electricity, 50% cold, 90% magic, 10% physical.

    Sadly, he's still underpowered.

Demogorgon is specifically immune to Lower Resist, so if you want to knock down his magic resistance use one of the other spells that lower magic resistance such as Pierce Magic.

Does the spell "lower resistance" stack effects if you cast it multiple times?

Yes. If one casting of LR reduces a targets magic resistance by 30%, two will reduce it by 60%.

So it's reasonable to assume that one of the best strategies against Demogorgon is to Spell Trigger 3 Lower Resistance spells together?

According to Camdawg, Demogorgon is immune to Lower Resistance (I cannot verify this). However, Pierce Magic will reduce magic resistance (1% per caster level) as will Pierce Shield (10% + 1% per caster level). The Answerer will remove 15% magic resistance per hit, so this might be more effective than three castings of Pierce Magic in a Spell Trigger.
