[IMG] Hi everybody, this is my first posting, so here goes!

I downloaded NI from its website, but have experienced some problems. After it had finished downloading, I tried to create some new items from existing ones. To rename one of them I believe I somehow messed up the string references after adding some new strings to it. I don't know what I did, but each and every string, from the thousands there, appeared to make no sense at all, each being fragments from others it seemed, such as random lines that started from the middle of a random sentance, etc. I closed the program and started ToB up, but everything that should have had words on it was meaningless, like the start where it should have said 'Start new game' etc was just nonsense, ie as I detailed above. After deleting every Baldur's gate file I could find, apart from the saved games which I copied to a new folder, then deleted the original, I tried to reinstall the games. SoA installed and seems to work fine, but I cannot install Tob. Autorun doesn't give me the option to install again or even uninstall, but instead has the normal 'play' option, and if I click that it tells me to insert disk 2 of SoA and just starts that game instead of ToB! If I explore the ToB disk and go to 'setup' that way, if I click it it starts for a couple of seconds before saying:

'An installation support file could not be installed.

    The docfile has benn corrupted'.

If I even click 'BGMain' in the ToB disk it says:

'An Assertion failed in Chitin.ccp at line number 1628
Programmer says: Error initializing key table, bad key file'.

I dont know what to do, I tried Keyfile cleanup tool on the NI program but that doesn't work either!

Any and all help/responses will be much appreciated.

Tolomus, are you trying to edit something for your own benefit or for distribution in a mod? If it's the former, I wouldn't even bother with changing the strings since it's easy to break your install using something like NI. If it's for distribution, using WeiDU to add strings to the item is a snap and less likely to break something.

For the installation problems, I would try uninstalling SoA and then reinstalling both of them. The chitin.ccp problem is from a corrupted chitin.key file (or ToB thinking it's installed when it isn't), which only a re-install can restore.

If that advice doesn't work, then the problem could be in your registry.

Go into start menu, click on "run" and type "regedit" in the field (without quotation marks). Then click on My computer in the registry, and do a search for Throne of Bhaal or ToB, or whatever it is that works. Once you get some selections appearing, then delete them, and click F3 to go to the next item. BE VERY CAREFUl, if you delete the wrong thing you may stop another program from working as well.

Sorry to go through this step by step, I assume you know what you're doing since you're editing things, but I just wan't to make sure on the off-chance that you didn't know how to manipulate the registry.

Hi, thx for the help. In response, i was editing for my own benefit, ie just experimenting. Also, I'm not at all experianced with this, I was trying to teach myself if you know what I mean. Anyway, I did uninstall both of them, and used the registry like you said, Manus, but after installing SoA again, which worked fine, i won't let me install ToB again, it says:

'An installation support file could not be installed.

    The docfile has been corrupted'.

    What shall I do?

Searched through the Interplay and Bioware forums and haven't found anything with this error message. It's posisble it may be caused by a CD read error; try cleaning your CD or using another CD drive. If you have another computer available, try using your disc to install ToB so we can narrow it down to your CD or your computer.

I tried cleaning the disk, and used a different drive, but the same message appeared. What I'd like to know is how the disk could be corrupted from this NI program, which is the only reason that I can think of that would cause these problems, as both events happened at the same time. Or is it just in my computer. Is there anything else I can do?

[IMG] You tried on a different drive but same registry?
Do try loading the compact disc on another comp and click install. See if you can get past that error msg.

    Good Luck~~

    @tolomus

    Hi,

why do you use NI for item making? The IEEP from TeamBG is very simple and more secure.

I have heard of that before but could find where to download it. I also heard that NI is better and more professional. Could you tell me where to download IEEP? Thx.

@ Bang: Hi and thanks. I just downloaded IEEP, and will soon try it out.

@ all: Luckily, I just figured out how to fix my game, all I needed to do was to make a certain file, BGMain I think, not read-only! Thanks all for the feedback ppl.

I was never able to get it to work properly, but DLTCEP is the best item (among other things) editor around. I lost the link, but it's easy enough to find.
