I'm playing a new game, and I don't have any mods installed except for the baldurdash fixpacks.

When I reached the room with the Mephit portals in Irenicus' Dungeon, I found a short bow +2 on the table.

Now, I've heard of items showing up if you are playing with an imported character, but this was a fresh, brand new sorcerer. But, I previously, in a different save file, imported a character from BGI. Is that the reason for this shortbow+2?

@Klorox I don't know about that but I have another question...are short bows really better to equip your people with than large bows?

because of their higher ROF ?

in BG I the large bows ruled the battle fields...

but now you, the experts, recommend short bows over larger bows in BG II ?

You are just lucky that's all.
    Go pick some numbers. :D

You can't talk Minsc out of Heartseeker after he found it in the Dragon's Lair. :shake:

And my PC does great damage with Strong Arm. :thumb:

Yoshimo can't use a longbow. Besides, I'd take a +2 shortbow over a regular longbow any day.

I hate it that a Composite LongBows need 18 strength.
Yeah thieves cant use longbows, only short bows.
Whats this about ROF? I thought they both had the same.

Other than Gesen's and Tuigan, I dont like short bows. And Imoen can use either pretty well.
Heartseeker, Manabow, Ripper and Strongarm rock for fighter types.

Klorox, I'm not sure why you gat the +2 bow.

As far as short vs. long bows, I've always felt the game offered better short bows (Tansheron, Tuigan, Gesen). Plus, from a RP perspective, I just can't picture an Adventurer lugging around a long bow; a short bow seems to be more mobile.

Did we ever get an answer to the original question, about the bow showing up on that table?

    No HB, we didnt.

I have to disagree with you Splunge.
A long bow is no more difficult to sling on our back (given your height is 6'' or above) than a short bow. Also in a book I read once, the ranger could remove the string of the elven long bow and weild it as a staff when travelling. A six-foot long yew is definately more useful as compared to a 3 footer in this case.
Even if you didnt, the long bow is used to hurl the arrow at the target. In the movie Scorpion King, the longbow used in the climax is akin to the Strongarm. A short bow couldn't do that.

Tansheron and Gesen are nearly overpowered, since they dont depend on the arrows for their damage. But put normal arrows in them and a long bow is anyday better than a short bow.

I once got a full plate mail from that room, in the table near Khalid's corpse I think :D

Oh, and I got another full plate from a random cowled wizard. Fell out of my chair, that time

The drops in Irenicus' Dungeon can be or are (not sure if it's a mod or not as I haven't played an unmodded game in 3.5 years) randomized in a few places, one being Khalid's room and the other being the goblin mob drops. I have gotten 3 lvl 7 scrolls (two being Simulacrum, which I get frequently) and a lvl 6 scroll in a single run-through, I have also gotten a +2 Short Bow, a +2 Long Sword and a couple of Laurel's Tear Necklaces among other things.

Shrikant: If, in real life, anybody ever used a bow as a staff, they'd undoubtedly ruin the thing.

    RL, agree with you.
Elven man, suspension of belief = total.
Though, that tale was a bit off kilter. That brand of elves still had vestigial wings.

    Why the argument over bows?

I give short bows to thieves and mages but long bows to strong fighters (Minsc or PC). Yes there are some powerful short bows but two characters can't use the same bow. Spreading the training means all get a good bow eventually - or X-bow, or sling etc.

Hydragyrum's nailed it. I usually try & plan it so that all have an unlimited ammo weapon (or ammo box) eventually. There are plenty of them about, more than enough for one party, so it's easily doable. And don't forget throwing daggers! The Boomerang Dagger & Fire Tooth (or whatever it's called) are pretty good, too. Actually, their base damage is better than a bow's, and you can use a shield with them. And they also get the high ROF. And Kensais can use them (but not with a shield, obviously). I like them ... can you tell?
