2H swords are just so undeniably sweet. i know people will accuse me of saying it because they include so many good magical and enchanted versions of he weapon, but no, this is not the reason i like them.

i only pick weapons because of their influence on the character themself. a mage wouldnt carry a sling around if he had an ego the size of a horse, he'd get in there with his big staff and beat the living s*** out of everything, jus to show the fighters whos protagonist; just like my elven fighter carries a 2H sword to show everyone that hes not 'just a puncy elf': "hey, i might be half a foot shorter than you but look at the size of my sword!!!"

    that sort of thing.

I love Scimitars. I guess this makes me any less of a man than someone who loves 2handers? :p

Katanas! (they are more exotic than long swords) Do not however underestimate the power of a good bow.

I know (I suppose you mean celestial furry), but I just think it's cooler to have your char dual wield katanas than it is to have him/her dual wield plain long swords.

[IMG] I love all the swords (inc katanas and scimitars) except for Carsomyr (wussy paladin weapon) but i dislike other plain weapons especially those wooden ones. Wood, i laugh in your face as i cut your staff in 2 with my sharp, lovely, metal swords muahahaha :hahaerr:
    Just my opinion.

While you may laugh in the game with breaking a quarterstaff in two with your sword, might I mention that in the real world a quarterstaff properly handled makes someone with a sword in a bad position? I've got somewhat of experience in this field, so let me explain: You've got more range with a stave, you can deal out punches with the staff on opposite directions much faster than with a sword, you can put more power behind it, etcetera.

Quarterstaves are good :) If only they had a pointy end, they'd be even better, but then again, it'd become a spear ;)

[IMG] I was only dissing the quarter staff in the game. I know that a quarter staff well handled is a very effective weapon. But the game doesn't carry this over very well, i blame this on the quarter staff animation.

Hope that clears up any misunderstanding in my previous reply.

I totally agree with you Lazy Bonzo, they could have made so much more of the quarter staff, now it's often put in the hands of wizards that don't do anything with it.

This reminds me of a discussion with a nonBG2 playing friend:

Me: And this is my Mage, he's great! Look at...
Him: What is that in his hands?
Me: Urhm, that would be the Staff of the Magi
Him: A Staff? You gave your mage a staff?
    Me: Yeah, of course.
    Him: Why?
Me: Because he's a mage, he has to have a staff.
Him: Why do mages have to have a staff?
*Here I rambled on on how he could suggest a mage should actually use a different weapon, and sadly, in the end I saw his point.*

Why does a Mage need a staff? I mean, Gandalf has a sword, why are mages stuck with Slings, Staffs or Knifes? Stupid game rules :p

Mage doesn't need a staff. It was your choice to equip it.
Mage is restricted from usage of certain weapons. That includes majority of swords.

Oh, btw, who told you Gandalf is not MC mage? Or better, are you sure his sword is not Moonblade? And are you sure his sword is not a version of Seeking Sword?

Don't expect from IWD2 to let you do everything you want. It will also have - rules. The only difference with BG2 can be variety of items. But that's design and not rules part, right?

I think the mage is best with two daggers.( Boneblade/Life-steeler +4)
I always equipped Minsc with something brutal e.g. I like Lilarcor( a bit annoying)
and the Gram sword Of grief.
Every type of weapon has a strong magical version, or almost all of them...( Darts are weak).

No Extremist. Gandalf isn't a MC mage. He is one of the Istari, who are an order of wizards. Gandalf's Sword Glamdring is no Moonblade, nor a seekingsword. It was a sword forged in Gondolin, orignally wielded by the only king Gondolin ever knew, the Elf Turgon. Of all this, I am sure.

I said it in the earlier post. A mage doesn't HAVE to use a staff, I acknowledged that. My point was the weapon restrictions, being to Staffs, Slings, Daggers and Darts only. Those restrictions suck.

The reason that mages are restricted in weapons is quiet simple they don't have the tiime to train the other more complicated weapons as they spend all their time reading books and studying. The weapons that they can use are all of a simple nature and can be used effectivly with little training. Also in one of the Dragon lance books (one of the early ones with Rastlin in) it explains how the metal effected the flow of magic however they were alowed silver daggers.

Aislaby, training of using a weapon seems to me more like proficiencies, which are restricted for the Mage. The weapons they use are of simple nature? Can you explain to me how using killing a foe with slings or darts is simpler than say with wielding a hammer? I think that to be much harder actually.

As for metal disrupting the flow of magic, I don't think they thought that one out very good (though I haven't read Dragonlance yet) because if say the mage carries a sword, that will disrupt his spell. How would a mage handle a fullplated warrior? Stick him with his knife? Oh no wait, fullplate. Sling small rocks between his eyes?

And how would they make magical weapons? Surely you can't enchant something that disrupts Magical Flows.

[IMG] Mages spend all their time studying? perhaps some mages yes, but certainly not sorcerers who have magic in their blood. But sorcerers can not wield swords, hammers etc either. I agree with Faragorn that a hammer is easier than a sling or dart to use. However in the case of a sword/scimitar/katana i would say they are harder to learn to use properly than slings and darts.
