ToB Technical Problem

So I'm having a bit of a problem playing ToB. Running through SoA but ToB lags awfully. For instance, just walking around the environment runs slower than any battle in SoA ever did. Battles with many enemies tend to lag things a lot but the number of spell effects seems irrelevant. Even when in a Timestop, things just don't run smoothly. Needless to say, it's terribly tedious to play.

To make it easier on anyone who attempts to help, I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware problem with my computer; I won't bother with listing the specs but it's many times over enough to run BG2. As far as mods, I'm running the ToB patch, Baldurash, and numberous NPC and tactical challenge mods but I really don't see how that could be relevant. I'm running off of a full install, using an image on a virtual drive. I do own the game and can easily play off of the CD if anyone thinks that might help. Regardless, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Seems unusual that you'd get this problem in TOB and not SOA if it were a hardware issue. If I were you I'd do a clean install of TOB and see if you get the same thing with that.

Why yes I wondered if you did solve it, unfourtunately I have 0 (zero) knowledge about technical problems so I can't help ya sorry.

My own game can sometimes be tediously slow in SoA, but NOT in ToB, the reverse, strange isn't it? Maybe something to do with our heavy mods both?

No, I haven't taken pains to solve it just yet for a couple of reasons. One, I'm still playing SoA with my few parties right now and two, because school work keeps me too busy to mess with it. When I give some of the suggestions here a try, I will let everyone know. If I have to do a reinstall, it will likely have to be after spring break since my disks are at home. But I'll post any resolution here nonetheless.

Have you experienced this choppiness BEFORE installing all those heavy mods?

 I remember, my friend had a VERY HIGH END spiffy PC, but even his supreme PC was playing BG2 choppy after I introduced all those mods I have discovered. He liked the mods. But he was frustrated as his PC could work all newest games with freaking graphics, sounds, etc: BUT the very same PC can not make the good old game BG2 run fast.

^Ah I should have guessed.

Well, I hope you can solve your problem. IMHO uninstalling, running a scan disk, or installing into different, less used directory may work.

I used to install BG2 in my C: directory, like almost anything else.

Then in my last install I decided to specify D: for the procedure.

Now it runs slightly faster, I can tell. :thumb: As D: directory was nearly empty before I guess.

Well I only have on hard drive (though I could partition) but it shouldn't make any difference: C has over 200 gig of space left so I doubt it's a space issue and, in general, I don't think it's a problem with hardware.

I've reinstalling the game 6 times, and each mod at last N times until it all... is still not perfect? :/
Anyway, it doesn't affect savegames, so you will enjoy :D .
