Since I love taking guys out before they reach me I equip all my characters with ranged weapons, but I also really would like to dual wield one or two of them (my swashbuckler especielly). Is there a mod or something that will allow me that? If I'm allowed to say, it's crap that you can't in the original game... A swashbuckler is "made" for dual wielding but then he will act as a tank. He won't survive that for long.
    Any ideas anyone?

    a) It's hardcoded and can't be changed, sorry.
    b) How does one reload a sling with one hand?

    a) Ok... Too bad. Then dual wielding is not really an option I guess. Crap. :(
    b) The same way you do it with a shield in the other hand. :p Or you put the off hand weapon away when you draw your sling, the same as you do with the other melee weapon. If you can change weapon in the right hand it shouldn't be to hard to just put the left hand weapon away.. Or perhaps you use a throwing weapon. Preferably a returning one.

I would rather say that ranged weapons are not an option, as all of them suck, especially in later chapters.

Ranged fighting is neat for casters or weak characters, and even the tanks may benefit from a good ranged weapon from time to time.

Though it sucks if the character also dual-wields, it is not a realistic approach to limti one's power, it can be done in combat but it is tedious.

I like the way quick weapons handled in IWD2, for ease of use.

    2 things:

    1. You don't need a mod. The inventory screen pauses, so you can take the off-hand weapon out and put a ranged weapon in a quick weapon slot before going back into the game. Fire the ranged weapon, and when you want to melee go back into the inventory screen and switch them back. A pain in the butt if you use it a lot, but...

    2. Any ranged weapon spells can still be used with dual-wielding; Melf's Minute Meteors, for example. As a bonus, you'll also get a ranged attack from your off-hand weapon due to a bug.
    ......................................................................
I've never played IWD2 (nor will I :p ), so I don't know if it's similar, but I loved the way they did it in Wizardy 8. Two main hands, two off hands, and you could switch. That means that you could have a sword and shield setup and a bow and arrow setup that you could switch between as needed. Or if your guy was an uber-tank, you could have a sword and shield and a two-handed weapon that you could switch between. (You couldn't have a sling with a shield, either. :p )

    EDIT: @Silverstar:
Then it's a shame they wasted such good programming on such a worthless game. :p

IWD2 had FOUR totally different weapon packs, each representing two hands, put either a shield&weapon, two weapons, or one two-handed weapon in each pack.

You could have very different weapon combos, ie:sword&shield in one, crossbow in another, a staff in the next, and two scimitars for the fourth. You can alternate between ALL with a simple click on main screen. It sure made life easier. :thumb:

Warmonger: So you prefer to just stand still and do nothing while the enemy close in on you? I'm in chapter 6 now and I still prefer to put a bunch of axes, daggers and arrows in him before he reaches me... A lot of the enemies die before they even reach me.. Maybe you meant in ToB but I can't imagine it's better to take on a healthy guy than a already battered up guy there either..

And as I said before. I have no real desire to put my thief in the front line, maybe that's a strategy that works for you but I can't really see the greatness of it...

Felinoid: IWD2 a worthless game? I don't think I'm the only one seeing a lot of resemblance between that and BG2. :p BG1 was different (and great) because of the freedom, BG2 don't have that...

Oy. I would think you guys would be used to my "3e is teh ebil" rants by now. The ruleset alone would make the game worse than watching golf; 3e is an abomination...and so forth. ;)

    @Panopticon:
Yeah, I'm not exactly in love with BG2 either.

Not being able to dual wield slings and crossbows I have no objection to, but I wouldn't mind using two axes of hurling, or tossing out darts or throwing knives with both hands.

I think it would be appropriate for weapons that double as throwing weapons, like Azure-edge, for example. It returns to your hand, so there's really no good reason (other than the game's coding) why one couldn't dual-wield Azure-edge and The Mace of Disruption, for example.

It would be: Whack, whack, whack, toss, catch, repeat. Sounds reasonable and combat realistic.

Anything else would be: Whack, whack, whack, sheath, load, aim, fire, holster, unsheath, whack, repeat. Eh...not so much. :heh:

Yeah, we know you hate the third edition.

To be honest, I don't think the quick weapons setup in Icewind Dale II is the greatest thing ever. It's not that much more convenient than the Baldur's Gate II setup.

^Are you kidding? Let's face it, I am not a deep fan of IWD2, (though it is the first IE game I ever played so it will always have a special place in my heart but) BUT I accept the fact that its qucik weapon slots are VERY useful and user-friendly.

You can basically arrange a total of four weapon PACKS, be it dual-wielding, missile, sword&shield, or two handed melee, it does not matter, you can always switch between with a simple click. However in BG2, only fighters have 4 weapon slots, and there is only ONE slot for off-hand so you can'T equip a shield&off-hand weapon or misile weapon together. You HAVE to un-equip something and re-equip as you want, which is damn tiring, especially if you love ranged attacks to soften tough enemies and then use dual-wielding skills or a sturdy shield in melee. :(

This is why my guys who use two handed weapons tend to have the ranged weapons as well. They can't use the shield/off-hand slot to begin with. It's also why I tend to have a few in my party.
