A pickpocket skill of 160 (using potions if nessecary) will "virtually" guarantee immunity from being caught in a shop (there is ALWAYS a 1% chance of failure regardless of skill points.) The hardest place/store/pub to steal from imo is Bernard in the Copper Coronet.

Don't risk p.ping too early on. The items etc will all be there later on.....unlike the potions etc if you use them all now in an attempt to steal with poor pp skills.

Just try for yourself Jack. I've p.p'd just about everyone in the game. Some places/people are harder than others. Be brave, the old "will I/won't I get away with it" adrenaline rush is better discovered for yourself. :)

In the Copper Coronet's "lust chambers", there's a thief called Yarin in one of the back-rooms, with the gauntlets of pick-pocketing, wich increases your p.p.-skills with 20 percent. Very interesting when you like thieving.

Look out for Ribald too. He has a resistance against pickpocketting or something... I just think that guard of his, has great eyes.

    BTW, finally 450 posts!

Yavin 4 was the planet on which the rebels had their base in SW1 (the first movie back in 1980ties)

EDITED HERE AS RESPONSE TO WILDFIRE'S MESSAGE BELOW: Something orbiting a star is a planet. Something orbiting a planet is a moon. (I know. I know. Don't kill the messenger. Its not Your fault)

    TO THE TOPPIC!!!

Ribald has a few potions of thievery to sell. As in he is almost inviting Your thief to pickpocket him. :) drink all his potions and there should be no trouble in picpocketing him. And early in the game its a great trinket he wears.

I think the penalty for stealing's a bit harsh. Maybe it would be better if you had to pay a fine, or get 100 lashes (lose hitpoints) or something other than the whole neighborhood going hostile.

[IMG] I find the best way to p.p is to save before any attempt and if you fail, just re-load, its that simple.

If I may clarify my point, maybe the hostility could be limited in time, or if the guy catches you you don't have to fight for your life, but just lose the money you stole and then some, or lose some (non-fatal) hitpoints. I once had to avoid the entire Bridge District because I tried to pickpocket a nobleman in the five flagons and the fight spilled out into the street.

    :p

to the topic. A great idea Ironbeard. This time I don't have any corrections to Your suggestion. I think it gives a great lift on reality. Which is my epic search in ComputerRPG

WAndering slightly off topic : Yavin 4 was actually the moon orbitting the gas giant of Yavin. It was here that the rebels launched the attack upon the first Death Star, and later on the Massassi temple was used as a Jedi Accademy by Luke Skywalker until the temple was destroyed bye the Yuuzhan Vong. (And ppl say I know too much about Starwars - Bah! :D)

    [IMG] PICKPOCKETING IS GREAT !!!

by far more elegant than killing enemies and looting their mutilated bodies ... and sometimes it is the only way to get some *useful* items plus that a good, competent thief will allow a party to be well equipped even at the start of the game.

The only drawback is that you can´t sell the stuff you once pickpocketed/ stole - even if you try your luck in a distant place like trademeet/ Umar Hills. That is unrealistic (yep, I know - game ballance)

It is actually a base of 5% that you will fail no matter what.

it is funny when you pick someones pocket, your person barges into them and if it works they don't even notice!
