[IMG] I'd like to try to beat the game with two or one charactars, what would be the best class and race to do this with?

Well it depends on how much of a challenge you want. The game is beatable with any character solo (on normal mode), but it's a lot easier with a caster class as your main class (cleric, druid, mage, sorceror).

As for race, the spell resistance ones (deep gnome and drow) are the easiest, though any is possible.

Drow paladin 1 / sorcerer x is an easy solo through normal and HoF.

A deep gnome monk is easy to solo the normal campaign with and doable, but difficult, in HoF.

A good two character party would be a bard plus any other character. Any race would do for each of the characters.

I think a deep gnome monk 1 /cleric X would be better. The 20% XP penalty won't be a factor.

Standard two player party is sorc + cleric...

I've finally decided to make a dark elf fighter/wizard to solo the game, using wizard as my dominant class. How many levels of fighter do you think I need? I was thinking fighter 8 / wizard x

A Fighter 8 / Wizard X would do fine for soloing. The Fighter levels will be useful for offsetting the fact that you will level up faster than the availability of scrolls, so it would be no point being a pure level 10 Wizard, because at that point in the game you will only find scrolls for a 4th level wizard. So take Fighter levels whenever your Wizard gets too high for the local merchant's scrolls.

Aren't those extra 4 levels just a waste??? You only need 4 for the weapon specialisation. I get what you're saying HB but in the long run he could spend those 4 levels on something else ...

I sacrifice some power for playability. Sometimes you just want to melee through a bunch of enemies when you've run out of spells instead of constantly resting.
