Are there any good games to check out? I doubt I have the time to play them all the way, but it seems that BG2 was one of the last games I played, although I liked KoTR. It just seems that the bg series, iwd1, ps: t, etc. are still the best rpgs. I mean, after so many years the industry hasn't produced any more quality rpgs?

No, it hasn't produced much worth mentioning. Try Morrowind (not my choice, but many like it), the Fallouts (same deal), or you could go back to something like Ultima VII: The Black Gate.

You might also want to try Sacred. A pretty good story (as far as I am anyway). Though it has lots in common with Diablo 2 (ie combat), it is still good and adictive. I mean, you can ride horses! Try it.

I would recommend Fallout and Fallout 2. You can get them in a dual jewel disk case on Amazon, and they are great RPGs.

If your not one of the unfortunate souls whose copy isnt rendered unplayable by bugs, i wholeheatedly recommend Vampire TM:Bloodlines. Bugs aside(the only one ive experienced is slowdown), im finding myself completely hooked. The dialogue is nothing short of magnificant, and its full of easter eggs to find if your paying attention.

This game caught me by suprise, as i havent expected and played anything good since 2000, when BG2, D2, and IWD came out...

I'm getting VTM:Bloodlines within the next couple weeks, and there's news of a patch coming out soon. It's a shame this turned out to be another ToEE(In terms of bugs, because ToEE was damn good), because Troika needs a hit so it can stop being the publishers' b*tch.

And don't bother with Morrowind, it's crap.

I've actually played both the fallouts as well. I didn't really mention them as they are pre-bg series, and that's going back pretty far. I thought fallout 2 was better than 1 personally.

Arcanum was also quite a good game despite what people have said about it. My only complaint is that after a few hours of playing, things started to slow down, so you would have to shut the game down and restart. I think magic was sort of too powerful as well, but it was great. It whipes the floor to some of these other games that are coming out.

I've tried out morrowind too, but I honestly couldn't get very far. It was too aimless for my tastes.

I've been playing IWD right now for just a few hours. Brings back good memories and starting at such a low level is kind of fun. IWD is so much better than the second game. It just flows really well and it can be sort of challenging if you don't dual class everyone from fighter. I think the simplicity of the rules makes it better in a lot of ways, although I wish I could make it use IWD2's 3e rules.

Right now I have only a single human and I've taken a gnome, half-elf, elf and dwarf. It's also the first time I tried out a cleric/thief, which I like a lot actually. Too bad the lock-pick icon takes 2 hotkeys/clicks.

I'll try out the vampire game actually. Looks neat.

Ha, looks like we agree a lot about games, go you.

Perhaps Wasteland or System Shock 2 are worth trying out? They're free at www.the-underdogs.org.

Deus Ex is rocking my socks at the moment. RPG/FPS which is quite brilliant.

I must disagree with Rednik. Definitely Get Morrowind, I place it above BG1 and2 (great games)and NWD and NWD2(good games). There is a Morrowind combo pack now out, containing the Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansion packs. You may want to download a walk-through to have in reserve, in case you really get stuck. Morrowind is freeform, but you must be a bit carefull, as you can, at times, "break a quest" if you just explore and kill everthing you find. The early part of Morrowind can be a bit of a grind, but once you find the Mudcrab Trader on an island in the SE, with $10,000 in Gold, and you have a spell or device that let you travel easier, the action picks up.

Based on the positive comments about Fallout and Fallout 2, I may have to try those. Somehow, I missed Fallout for some reason, I must have thought Fallout was just another FPS and those boooooore me to death.

Sorry Starborn, but I'm with Rednik on Morrowind - I found it downright uplayable. There comes a point when too much of a good thing actually hurts a game, and one of the best aspects of RPG's is the interactivity with the environment and NPC's. It's overdone to a point where everything is sheer tedium. Also - when I want armor, I want a friggin suit of armor, not having to scrounge and find every single friggin' piece. At one point I was walking around with a leather breastplace, just one shoulder pad, one plate mail gauntlet and one tattered glove, one leather and one chain armpiece, one cloth legging and one chain legging, and a padded helmet - everything but a goddamn Hello Kitty purse. Jesus H. :toofar:

Let's just say Morrowind, much like Jethro Tull, is an aquired taste and not for everyone.

    My good games lately:

FPS: Far Cry has been taking up my time lately, and is easily one of the best (if not THE best) first-person shooter I've ever played. The environments are stunning (even on a mid-range GPU like my 5900XT), the AI is VERY challenging and actually smart, and the game is surprisingly long (good thing!).

I still have yet to play Half Life 2, so my title of "Best FPS Ever" may still have some competition. But for now, I'm having a blast.

As for Doom3...Ida know. It was worth the money (I got it for $35 about 3 months ago), but I'm having trouble working up the desire to go in any farther than I already have, which is the Delta Labs...

Strategy: Rise of Nations GOLD. If you're a fan of the Age of Empires games, you'll really get into this one. Tons of fun, but I'm starting to get a little bored (I play it too much, I think).

RPG: Yet another run through Knights of the Old Republic, which IMO easily rivals BG2 as one of my all-time favorite RPG's. I just got Falstaff hooked on it as well.

I also recently downloaded the 3 Premium module/expansions for NWN and plan to run through them in the next few weeks.

Starborn, Fallout is an isometric turn-based game. :D

I'm glad to see that DR agrees with me about Morrowind. However, my faults with the game are slightly different. Granted, it's a bit overwhelming, and Bethesda should be commended for that, but in all this drive to make a massive, living world, they lost sight of the fundamentals:

-The NPCs are glorified search engines, which shatters the immersion instantly

-The quests are boring, ranging from kill this or fetch that, to find this and deliver that.

-The combat is boring and painful

-The skill system is crap, although this is up for debate.

    -Cliff Racers

-And lastly, there is little to no sense of progress, aside from the guilds, which really don't mean much in my eyes.

@ Aikanaro: Deus Ex? So is VtM:B. Personally, the only probs I have with it is cockeyed stat - based shooting. Argh! Oh well... Does Source SDK work on it anyone? I know it's a Source game, but I also know Troika changed the mechanics. One reason why they changed Source was because "because our game takes place 100% at night" -Leonard Boyarsky, CEO of Troika.

WHY didn't they use the DOOM3 engine then?! Volumetric shadows.. /drools

Deus X is great, but it was a bit too involved for me personally. I havent played any of the new big deal games; HL2, Halo2, D3, San Andreus, KOTOR2, or the next batch of WW2 console games, although I wish I were playing them, I just cant right now.

However, there a re tons of great games out there from a few years ago I still find entertaining. For example, someone mentioned System Shock 2, a great game, or even any of the Total War series, or Stronghold, or Rise of Nations... Lots of fun games out there for the cheap. By the way, has anyone played that WW1 game that was supposed to hypothetically represent the possibility that Germany won the war, and there was like a mix of technology available like old an dnew, etc.? Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Best games I've played lately are Rome: Total War, Civilization 3 and Morrowind(it's boring in the beginning, but just shut down your brains and start fetching)

Depends of what you mean by a "good game." IMO, Evil Genius, The Sims 2, Half Life 2, and Metroid Prime 2 are rather good games if not perfect. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be a single RPG worth waiting for (and that new Zelda doesn't count ;) ). Of the above mentioned games I really have to disagree with Morrowing and Far Cry, of which both I have played. Morrowing is, like said, a slow starter and takes way too much patience before you get even a smallest spark of interest to play it again. Far Cry was just about shooting stuff with an attitude "I'M MENTALLY CHALLENGED" written right across the face of the protagonist. :shake:

You might as well check THIS topic -it might have some tips.

You should definately get V:TM - Bloodlines, it's an awesome game, and I haven't really experienced any bugs (except for the dreading crashing after Society of Leopold, but that's fixed in the patch.)

Just finished HalfLife 2...graphically amazing! I'm not a big FPS fan, but this and Doom 3 are beautiful games to play just for the graphics. I felt both games got a little repetetive, but I made it to the end of both and was fairly satisfied with them. As with most FPS games I play, I doubt I'll want to replay them any time soon, but oh well. I still can't bring myself to play NWN any more, and I just didn't have the patience for Morrowind.
Sacred was good for a few days of hack and slash, and SpellForce was actually a fairly decent Strategy game with a little RPG element thrown in.
Alas, I still find myself falling back on the BG or IWD series games. It's a good thing I don't have much time for playing games these days else I'd probably be depressed!
