[IMG] Some things mentioned as favorite items and why I do not agree:

Deck of Many Things - It's a ToB item! Anyway this item begs to be abused by reloads. Really bad.
Cloak of Mirroring - The visual effect is very annoying.
    "Jan's stuff" - Yeah sure. Good one, C'Jakob! ;)
Soul Reaver - It's name is Soul Reaver, right? Anyway, you get it so late you practically only use it in one fight. Not worthy of being a top item pick in BG2:SoA.

Here are my top item picks:
    1. Ring of Gaxx - Anyone can use it.

    2. Staff of the Magi - Mages only, but the equip to be invisible and 8 hour Spell Trap (ugly visuals though) coupled with several other excellent abilities this staff makes it's user thoroughly overpowered.

    3. Robe of Vecna - Again, mages only, but (practically) eliminating the major drawback of casting spells - the casting time - is just plain nasty.

    4. Carsomyr - Paladin only, but it gives 50% MR and it dispels magic when it hits. :)

    5. Girdle of Hill Giant Strength - Also Stone and Frost Giant Strength belts, Ring of Human Influence and Girdle of Fortitude. They all raise one of your stats to 18 or more and anyone can use them. These stat boosters can change the way you design your character and influence which NPC's you choose.

IMOENS BELT.....(MAKES YOU TOTALY IMMUNE TO ANYTHING THAT CAN KILL, BUT OF COURSE YOU HAVE TO CHEAT TO GET IT, AND IT TAKE THE FUN OUT OF THE GAME TOO, AND IT IS FOR BIGINERS, OH MAN I COULD GO ON FOREVER....).....IS MY FAVORITE ITEM.

Hm... Does anyone know how much the Robe of Vecna costs? I've been thinking of "buying" it (Get it with Shadowkeeper and remove some gold :p ).

The Ring of Earth Control (Charm Earth Elemental, +1AC) is pretty cool as you can use it with the Cloaks/Rings of protection.

The Bracers of Defense (AC3) is also great, mages can get really low AC with it.

    Yah, ring of Gaxx rules.

With its regeneration its one of my faves.

I equipped my cleric with it, and I was unbeatable the rest of the game! My cleric had an AC of -11!!!

(of course, I bummed at Irenicus in hell, but who didn't! )

Since the question isn't what is the most powerful item, I'll list the one item which I would hate to do without. I've soloed three mages, and could do without the robes of vecna or even the staff of magi I think if I had too. My paladin could do without Carsomyr if I had to. I could do without any weapon if I had to. If I was told, someone would delete some items from the game and I could pick one item, my favorite, to keep it from being deleted, I'd pick the bag of holding. I'd hate to do without it.

I'm going to have to go with a Killsword, or the Cloak of Mirroring.

In SoA, remember, the CoM reflects everything back period. Not just electricity, or whatever they changed it to in ToB.

And the Killsword should just speak for itself...

<insert some really startling litesaber sounds, here>

[IMG] My bard has been using the Harp of Dischord to great effect. It's really nice when 2/3 of the enemy stop attacking us and start beating up on each other! Unfortunately, we don't get the XP when they die that way...

From the early part of the game right through to the end, the ring of regeneration has kept my party alive and kicking (and punching and slashing ...). It gets passed from one character to the next as required. It's almost a 'family heirloom' by now.

Those glasses of identification are great too. Saved me lots of money.

In the later parts of the game I find the bag of holding and boots of speed make life a lot easier.
My thief with boots of speed hides in shadows (140% chance of success) and scouts out the whole area in minutes. Really cuts down on the time required. Then the party regoups and goes hunting with a complete map.

Weapons? I guess Crom Faeyr is really nifty. I love the way most golems just fall over with just one hit.

[IMG] I think the ring of human influence is one of the handiest items. You can create your character with a CHA of 3 so you can have tons more stats for whatever else you need. Ring of Gaxx, Crom Faeyr, Holy Avenger, Celestial Fury, Frost Reaver(+3 axe from D'Arnise Hold), any Girdle of Strength, Gorgan Plate +4, Armor of the Hart, Soul Reaver(love that -1 THACO per hit!), Wave Blade, Impaler +3 spear. Lots of good stuff :)
