yo, i've done quite a few quests already so i'm pretty seasoned in the game, but i'm getting creamed in the fight after the bridge with the 4 beholders and the shadows.

    any battle advice? strategies?

Well, for starters, who's in your party? What level are they?

Shield of Balduran is always an option.

It is a shield which reflects beholder rays to the Beholders. When you attack them, beholders send you rays and thanks to the Shield of Balduran, you just stand and they kill themselves.
Area effect spells like fireball, web, cloudkill, ice storm etc. works good against beholders

The bonus merchant sells it at the Adventurers Mart.

If you want to get around using the shield of cheese i suggest some spell tactics. That is, sneak a thief close to the beholders, then have a mage caste confusion on them. Follow up with some heavy damage spells(ice storm, fireball...) and they should be toast in no time

You will probably be hampered by the undead which are closeby. Have Anomen down a potion of invisibility and start to Turn Undead. Be sure to turn the AI off. Get him between the gauths and the shadows. Those which dont die will run away.

Like Celesialraven said, have a hidden Yoshimo/Valygar conduct your operations. Have a few hastened summons close up on them. Try to keep summoning things to keep the beholders occupied. Your party uses ranged weapons or spells.
Yoshimo's traps might not really work since when one goes off the gauths will be drawn near. Be sure to have Valygar backstab them. Improved Invisibility should make his life a lot easier.

Another way is to avoid them. Casting invisibility 10' radius is a good way to do this.

I like the tactics. I'm trying to improve my combat techniques. I've been pretty creative so far, but I have been having trouble with (1) turning undead; and (2) backstabbing.

My 2 paladins and Anomen can turn undead, but I have yet to successfully do it. (the latest attempt was a Greater Mummy that noone could attack at the bridge prior to the beholders)

Backstabbing is even tricker. Is all that extra effort worth the extra damage? (i know it's a relative question)

Thanks for all the tips so far.

Keldorn cant turn undead. I dont remember how it is implemented, but Anomen is still your best bet for it as he has the highest levels.Make sure to turn AI off else he will attack and this switches the ability off.
Activate turning and simply walk over to your target. Keep moving so they dont get to hit you. Since it pulses on 1/round it will take a little while before you get the Undead Turned discription. Lower level undead will simply be blasted. The rest will start walking away afraid. The affect generally lasts for a few rounds so while Anomen keeps turning and sticks near abouts the undead your other charecters kill em.

In the present situation, since Anomen is invisible the shadows wont attack him. Simpley have him standing as close as possible and watch em run.

Backstabbing works when your charecter is invisible/hiding and standing right behind the target. Valygar is a pretty good at it since he has good base attack and damage. You have to be using a thief weapon in melee and hit the creature within the round. If Valygar does @ 15 damage normally, with x4 backstab, that will become 60 points of damage. Generally takes out mages in 1 stroke.

Shield of Balduran if bugged(It doesn't reflect, it only pretects you from beholder rays)

Shield of Balduran is buuged ? Hmm, don't think so. I'll admit I use the "cheesy" shield, it does make the Unseeing eye quest, the rune door quest, and the underdark a piece of cake. If you honestly want to keep thinking SoB is cheesy, well everything, joluv and Deirdre sell, in all rights is cheesy, cos every weapon, ring, shield, armor, amulet, etc, etc, can be ruled cheesy, they all boost one pc or npc in the party. Personally, I would rule the robe of vecna as even more cheesier than the SoB. But that goes without saying. What would be even worse, using Aerie or having a Mage/Cleric pc, using the robe of vecna

well, i couldn't find the shield of baulderan in the adventurers mart so i just buckled down and used some tactics.

had anomen wear an invisibility ring and sneak past the beholders and turn the shadows. then i just charged with haste letting nadia go spell happy. only lost keldorn who was quickly resurrected after the battle.

took a few tries but i got it, thanks for the advice. i'm upstairs now muddling through the odd looking caverns trying to find the last half of this rod.

"Shield of Balduran if bugged(It doesn't reflect, it only pretects you from beholder rays)"

Maybe what you are taliking about is the Balderdash fixpack. IIRC it nerfs the shield from reflecting damage to just protecting you from the rays.

"well, i couldn't find the shield of baulderan in the adventurers mart"

You have to install the two additional merchants into BG2 that are on the bonus CD. One appears in the Mart, the other in the Copper Coronet. On the SP main page, in the BG2 section, you can also download the 2 merchants.
