I am, as always, in my eternal quest for the best solo character. I am currently playing with a mc eleven thief/mage. I have progressed quite far but I am running into some problems. I am thinking of starting over with a dual class character. Here are the choices I am considering.

    kensai/mage
    kensai/thief
    swashbuckler/cleric

Which of these is the best choice to play? Why?

I would dualclass after 9th level beserker to a thief to 10th level and ten finally to a mage. I think it is possible to dualclass more than once.
The beserker can get immune to imprisonment
the thief's abilities can make life so much easier
And the mage-part is improving even at level 17-18. So keep it as the last.

No, you can't dual class more than once; hence the word 'dual'...

Struck by my knowledge of PnP again. Hmmm Just sorry that I turned up a spark for you guys.
Here is the facts from PnP. Player's handbook 2nd edition page 62 1st column.

"Only humans can be dual-classed characters- To be dual-classed the character must have scores of 15 or more in the prime requisites of his first class and scores of 17 or more in the prime requisites of any classes he switches to. The character selects on class to begin his adventuring life. He can advance in this class as many levels as he desires before switching ro another class; there is no cut-off beyond which a character cannot switch. However, he must attain at least 2nd level in his current class before changing to another class. A character can acquire up to four classes, one from each group, as long as he has the ability scores and wants to make a change. Certain character classes have alignment restrictions that the character must meet, however.

it took me 10 years of PnP to realize this. I always thought it was two classes, (dual-class) But as You see BTA there is a limit of four, not two.
But this is PnP. Haven't tried this to test it in BG-series.

    EDITED HERE:
I've tried it out now. Don't bother. Only one dual class. My PC-experiment HonnyBunny couldn't get to be a mage... :(

I didn't ask if you could dual class more than once or even anything about dual classing itself.

I was asking what your thoughts were on the three possibilities. Its amazing that only one post even refered to my question.

Ok ok. It was a sidetreck. But It was important to know if one could dual class in BG as in PnP. Never mind

I think I wouæd play the Kensai/Thief if I should choose from those three. A strong fighter who can sneak up on enemies. Disarm traps. Find loot. And Pickpocket great items. It will be hard though.
The "usual Choice" would be Kensai/Mage. A mage with a fighters abilities will be excellent. Easier than soloing with pure mage.

The swasbuckler/cleric. hmmm I cannot foresee that. I think it will develop as the Kensai/mage player.

To make the confusion complete, I would design a Swashbuckler/mage. Covers a bit of fighting trapfinding and spellcasting.

But My favorite character is a F/M/T. Very similar to a Swashbuckler/mage. So I am preinfluenced :D

Conclusion: K/T the most challenging. Try it

You know, I just started a Cleric/Ranger (I've got about 15 games started now - aaargh!) to kind of dualo (as opposed to solo the game). He'll hang with Jan until I can get Imoen back but that Cleric Ranger really seems to kick some butt. He pretty much just marches about with his summoned army (mostly skeletons for now) getting the bad guys' attention while he throws rocks or runs in with his dual flails swinging.

I'm not sure of my ability to play him without some sort of trap-finding / lock-picking options (hence hanging with Jan and Imoen), but Cleric/Ranger really has some possibilities.

To the original question of this thread, I wouldn't play any of those three choices, but only because I'm not patient enough for my dualed character to level up to a useful place in his second class. Man, I want to bash (or stab or magically blast) stuff right the heck *now*. :)

My thoughts shock even me, but I think the too essentials would be thieving and healing. Hence I'd suggest a Swashbuckler or Assassin DC to Cleric or even DRUID (don't know if you can DC to a druid).

Odd, but I think it could be compelling. Remember, Clerics don't get all the glamour mages get in the SF books, but they do get some killer spells, esp. if you're neutral or evil and can do Harm as well as Heal.

    Hence, my final answer:

    Swashbuckler DC Cleric

I would try DC'ing thief to fighter at thief's lvl when he/she get backstab of 4.
You can boost picking traps/locks to *decent* value and be a very offensive kind of thief soon
    ------------------
    One idea:
    Druid DC Cleric,if tis possible
Would cleric's spells also include druid spells when cleric levels up? Both spell groups are 'priest', and character being a druid should give him access to druid-priest spells while being a cleric shall not only give him cleric-priest spells, but give advancement in priest spells number, therefore given access to higher level druid-priest spells?
(If I confused anyone with me speech, sorry :))

A druid/cleric isn't that good, for many druid spells and cleric spells are the same. In that case you'd better play a pure Cleric. I would advice a swashbuckler-cleric. Or indeed a Kensai/Mage, depends onr what you need in your party, cleric or mage-spells?

I am not in a party. I'm going solo.

I actually created a swashbuckler and played him out of the first dungeon. I did the circus tent and the party in the inn (a lot of hit and run there). After a side trip to the tanner I went for the slavers. I killed the Beastmaster and then dualed at 12th level. I freed the slaves and used the resulting 48,000 points to immediately level up to a 7th level cleric. I will try to finish the slavers and then head to Nalia's Keep.

I am enjoying it so far. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the input.

I'd say kensai/mage, they are quite powerful. Though I must admit I don't like mine. I still belive the best classes are mc cleric/mage, ahhh. The power.

I'm playing with a dc Ranger Cleric nd hes invincible, an alternative could be a dc cleric/thief, combine righteous magic (+1 Strebgth/3 lvls and max dam) with backstab and I reckon you could do as mutch as a kensai thief (perhaps)

Kensai D Mage, but then again, it makes it a little too easy in the last few chapters...

I am starting two solo games at the moment which i will be playing side by side:

One is the impossible one (see the mission impossible link)

And the other is a female 7 level Berserker dc to a theif straight away.
I am having a very big problem in the dungeon at the moment though.

i've been repeating my self in this reply so sorry

i beleive the best solo character would be a swashbuckler dualed at lvl 12 to a cleric.
i chose cleric and not fighter because i love clerics spells and thief /fighter combination is too common :p

you should put 3 points to dual wielding style and all the other points as you wish, but remember that priests can't use edged weapons

now whhen you dual to priest you should level up very quickly...
put your points to hammer(crom faeyr)
    flail(flail of the ages)
mace(mace of disruption- but you won't need it for long since once you got the cleric at level 15 the turn undead ability rocks!!!)

now after you get actived the swashbuckler everything should be easy (since you open chests, disarm traps and of course the weapon style which you'll use)

now you can dual any of the three weapons i mentioned in any combination proper for the circumstances(ex. if you are attacked by golems use the crom main hand.. etc)

I'm playing this character now aand i've never felt that i can't win some fights (even the firkaarg once my cleric got lvl 13 i beat him to the ground!!!)

NOTE: find some amulets and/or rings to decrease casting time to be a war machine...

I like playing a dual-class Fighter/Mage although it can be hard using him at times with just a mage robe until you find some elven chainmail. Another character I like is the Cleric/Ranger - can cast all the priest spells, wear any kind of armour and can use some quite deadly weapons.
