    Both thief 1 and 2.

Not very good at 1. Zombies are annoying

    Doing slightly better at 2.

    Both amazing games, even now

Those zombies are the sole reason why I donĀ“t play Thief I very much. I just hate them and the way they just keep climbing up how ever hard one chops them down. Also, some of the maps in are pretty poorly designed... Like the Bonehoard (yard?).

    Virne:

You should reload Thief1 and get my "cheats". I have a couple different levels. One just upgrades your arrows. The other makes you "invisible" to the ape/cray/bug men and the undead, too.

Upgraded arrows, as in none of your arrows "arc" during flight. When you pick up "one" crystal, you get about 500. Same idea with mines and potions (500). It doesn't alleviate the necessity that you learn the controls, or have some tough parts in the mission. It just lets you put out the torches, and take out the undead. More often than not, I CLEAN out a level.

Humans aren't "downgraded" at all. So Lord Bafford's, Hammerite prison, Constatine's, and Rameriez's places are running at full capacity. So is the Hammerite temple, the *first* time you go in there to get the talismans. You'll have to whack the guards at your discretion. But they are whackable. I think there's one single human guard I leave conscious in the Hammer prison, and that's it. It's like, 30 or 40 knockouts in each mission.

For the "cheats", all you have to do is replace the dark.gam file. Just zip down your original, and swap out the file whenever you want the cheats in or out.

You're right, though. In Thief1, you have to DASH past all the undead. Some of their patrol patterns truely are more like "seek" patterns. The AI is given boundaries, and it roams within those. The most obvious place this occurrs is down in the Bonehorde, and when you're trying to get to the Cathedral (for the first time).

The apemen and craymen aren't much better.

In Thief2, shadows are back. Sneaking and peeking are back. Rope arrows and moss arrows are back. Running is mostly uncool, unless it's running up behind someone to whack them. The "children" aren't all that much fun, and the faces can get really annoying, but it's not nearly like the undead in Thief1. The gameplay in Thief2 has been rectified and tweaked.

However, in Thief2, the plot suffers. The cutscenes suffer. Playing Thief1, the briefings and "credits" after a mission were inticing and well developed. The atmosphere and the plot mixed into the missions. It was just a better experience. In Thief1, the movies on the cdrom were nearly like a book. In Thief2, it's like Garret is just talking near you in some really cheap play. The plot may have worked, they just did a poor job of executing said plot.

This is the one reason why I'd tell you to use the cheats I have, Virne. Thief1 really does have an excellent story. I'd rather you cheat like a mad-dog baby killer, and play the game one time, than just hate it.

    So, yeah. I like Thief.

I liked them, the hardest level of Prt 1 was the Monastery behind the cathedral.

Again, for me, those insect creatures and zombies annoyed me.

Thief 1: Played on normal difficulty. Got to the level where that dude cuts your eye out, and it's crawling with those insect creatures. Got bored trying to get anywhere, as the creature that shoots stinging flies really annoy me.

Thief 2: Think i got to the mission where you have to break into a bank or something (fair city bank and trust). Was doing quite well, but had played the game solidly for about a week, so got bored. I'll go back to it at some point.

I love the game. It totally rocks. I just get bored of all out 1st person shooters, so Thief is always a good change.
Lets hope they make Thief 3 a bit more different though (as in, Thief 2 is exactly the same as Thief 1, but with new missions and a couple of extra features/arrow types. So, Thief 3 shouldnt be the same as Thief 2 but different missions again).

Are there any screenshots for Thief 3 on the net anwwhere?

Thief1 and 2 are a couple of games that do benefit from the Antialiasing and Ansiotropic filtering. It kind of "glosses" over some stuff. It makes it look not quite so jagged. On some games (like gta3), I prefer the precision as opposed to the gloss. But these two games, you do benefit from good hardware.

I use a 19" monitor, and a Ti4200. I crank the AA on to 4X-d3D or whatever it is, and the Ansio to 8x; maximum. Everything depends on the resolution you're running at too; I game with these two at 1600x1200. It doesn't really change *all* that much from 1024x768, but there's just a tiny difference, and if you have the hardware to play like that, it's good to go. At 1600x1200, you're not going to be able to tell any kind of AA/Ansio difference unless you've got it at 4x/8x. The 2x/2x just don't work at that high of resolution.

But you can play just fine at 800x600, without all the fancy stuff.

I'd tell you that the only thing that you NEED is a really good sound card. The better the sound card, the better off you're going to be. Visual indications count for a little in this game, maybe 33%. But the other 66% of the game is sound. Creeping and crawling, slithering and rattling. Closed-muff headphones are a seriously wicked kind of improvement, and you will quickly be able to tell a difference when you use them. Headphones in these games go a long ways, I would would expect Thief3 to be no different.

Virne, I still have those cheats. If you PM me with an account that can handle a 500k file or so, I'll send you the "full" version. Like I was saying, humans are the only thing that are still running at 100%; you will have to sneak and peek with them. Everything else is just a paper target. You'll want to backup your original dark.gam file; just use Winace or something, and ace it down to dark.ace.

Also, you do *NOT* want to get shot with an arrow or hit with a sword with these cheats on. You will get owned the first hit.

[IMG] I like Thief, only got it recently. however someone remind me never play in the dark with extremely loud sound and a bat in the room. Not only is the bat creepy as the windows are closed . But my mother knows what I'm playing and jumps behind me shouting 'Boo'

[IMG] I've only played Thief 2 but I really liked it. Nice atmosphere, good gameplay, just an overall great game.

    Bit offtopic:
Has anyone of you ever played the Thievery mod for Unreal Tournament? I ran into it yesterday and was wondering if anyone can tell me more about it. It's a multiplayer game in which one group plays the guards and another the thieves. Can anyone recommend it?
