[IMG] I just installed it and the beginning movie for Black Isle won't even play. (It starts and then gets stuck) The BioWare and Sarevok movies are also very slow and sometimes they get stuck. The beginning music is also EXTREMELY soft.

In the game, areas load very slowly and although my main character talks (out loud); Imoen does not. With subtitles on, her captions appear, but she has no voice. Maybe Winthrop made her put soap in her mouth as punishment for calling him a 'queer fellow.' I'll try to get Montaron and Xzar and see if they say anything, though I doubt it.
    Here my situation:
    DirectX Driver Version 8
    Nvidia graphics card (newest version)
    Standard memory cache
Had SoA and ToB installed before
Played this game at my friend's house, now it won't work for me

I know this looks like a list of complaints, but I've read the troubleshooting and nothing helps. I've also been on the Interplay website. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you get the DirectX patches? They're only supposed to fix multiplayer with DX8, but you never know. You also didn't tell us which OS you're using... And what kind of CPU you have and how much RAM...

    CPU: AMD Athlon 1GHz
    RAM: 128 MB SDRAM
    OS: Windows ME

I don't play multiplayer - does the patch only fix multiplayer slowness?

When did the patch for DirectX Version 8.0 come out? Thanks, I'll try installing it.

The DirectX 8 patch is quite old, and you'll find it in the Baldur's Gate section of this site.

Windows ME has no home on a harddrive. Please install 98 or 2000 if you know how to do it. ME causes a lot of trouble.

Right, Windows ME is the most bug-ridden OS ever released. Get it off your HD as soon as you can. For gaming, Windows 98 will work best. You could go with XP too, but you might need to get patches for some of the games to work.

I've been playing BG and BG2 for a couple of years on ME with no problems. Also upgraded to a Nvidia GeForce 3 with no problems.

AMD 800 mhz Athlon (I worked at AMD on this chip)
    128mb ram
    Windows ME
3dFX Voodoo replaced with Nvidia GeForce 3

[IMG] Then you must be extremely lucky. The only ME system I ever bothered with crashed with a blue screen about a minute after it was installed. Good indicator of what was to follow.

[IMG] Thank you, I just found somethings even stranger. Khalid and Jaheira talk, and Xzar talks fine. Montaron can only say one of his lines and no other NPC who's joined can speak out loud. Is ME also known for sound problems?

You are very right about ME. Personally, I don't believe it was complete when it came out. There are patches for it almost weekly! I can't play games like SimCity 3000, and I guess BG1 is one of them. I think maybe SoA and ToB work because they are newer so ME can better support them while BG1 is older (1999?) and incompatible with ME. But I always thought newer could support old and older could NOT support newer. Not true for Millennium Edition?

Heh, I was playing BG on a pentium 233 with 32 RAM and a 2 gig hard drive until recently. Actually worked pretty well, didn't have any problems. So it's definatly not your system...

ME was released to join in what is commonly known as 'the millenium histeria':
A lot of fuss about the year 2000. (In the end a lot of fuss about nothing)

A lot of fuss and a lot of confused and 'milleniumbug-scared' consumers could not wait to get their hands on anything carrying the label 'Millenium'.

Microsoft, as ever, was well aware off this, and, offcourse, they could not finish the OS in time. (indeed, the year 2000 passes only once, this is a very strict deadline :) )

Result: well, you all know the result...
Microsoft: Where do you want to crach today?

Its a happy consumer sociaty ain't it?

I know, I know, it's of topic and all, but I had to spill my guts...

Hey try installing a different operating system, 98 SE is good for gaming..., win 2k is quite stable... (don't upgrade though, just format first)

    eh... what can I say...

Thanks for all your help, BUT

installing Baldur's Gate Expansion: Tales of the Sword Coast helped it A LOT. No more sound problems; its also a bit faster. The only thing that remains is that Black Isle beginning movie still doesn't load. Oh well, can't have everything.
