So if you haven't heard, Metallica is releasing a new album (Death Magnetic) worldwide on September 12th.

The 1st single they've released 'The Day That Never Comes' sounds nothing like anything on St. Anger, which for many fans, is a welcome change.

I'm looking forward to this one. Everything - from the damn name of the album to the band's use of the old-school logo - is pointing to a return to vintage Metallica. I mean "Death Magnetic" - how 80's is that? Sweet. The tracks I've heard so far are also a distinct improvement on St. Anger.

I guess Metallica heard the outcry from the fans after St. Anger came out. It's about time they got in touch with thier roots. :thumb: :rolling:

[IMG] St Anger sounds like they tried to go back to their original sound and failed so hard they just put the drums up loud and repetitive to detract from the massively deformed background noise of failed memories and atrocious composition.

Hopefully in this rendition they listened to their better albums and something clicked.

I remember the first time I listened to Master of Puppets, Metallica and ...And Justice For All as whole CDs. I was blown away, these albums were, and still are, musical masterpieces. This new track honestly didn't impress me, despite being an obvious improvement (as many before me have said) over St. Anger material. Not that I expect this new CD to be as amazing as Master of Puppets, or have the brooding, intense atmosphere of Metallica, but still.

It is a welcome change though, lets hope the rest of the album holds up.

Well off the Wikipedia page I found a couple links, both of which led to websites which had reviewed the album. The answer: Metallica is back, baby.

    Check it out.

I'd have reserved 'inflicting' for news of a St Anger II. Then we would really know how much they hate us all.

    ...what a horrible thought.

    Rather wishy-washy stuff, IIRC. :p

I find St.Anger listenable and even enjoyable at times, if listened to in segments. Two or three songs at a time. It could have been a great album, but isn't. The song structures are wonky and they suffer from the conscious "stylistic choice" of omitting solos, the snare sound is crazy and the playing overall is sloppy. And if you're gonna have long songs like that, it's not a good idea to have the kind of catch phrase lyrics that are on the album. They could have used some more substance.

But this new stuff. If this had been the album released after Metallica, it would have been impressive. Now...I wish I could say I'm more excited than I am. The ghost of Load is still present. It's in their sound, in their playing, in Hetfield's vocals (his post-Black half-assed vocal style kind of grates my ears). And Ulrich is sloppy even on studio recordings these days.

This stuff is still a big step in a good direction. Maybe this will grow on me a bit in time.

I've heard the first advance songs off of it, "Cyanide." It sounds like they're getting back to old school. I hope the rest of the album isn't just as unintentionally awful as St. Anger.

As a lifelong Metallica fan, I really hope they stop trying to reinvent themselves and get back to formula. Also - as a drummer, and as a drummer whose sole inspiration growing up was Lars Ulrich, I find it really sad how sloppy he's gotten. He's abandoned all technical precision in favor of...well, I can't even describe it. He just sounds terrible.

I'll likely pick up the album and I hope not to be disappointed.

DR - As a drummer also, I've never thought much of Lars' technique. You are right that his earlier playing was pretty good, but not inspirational, at least not for me. Neil Peart, I think, is a much better technician, and his playing is much more dramatic, much like Mitch Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix's old drummer, at least IMO.

Mitchell was the kind of drummer who could make the rest of the band play better, and I think some of the better parts of Hendrix's own technique was driven by Mitchell's amazing sense of rhythm and timing. But I think Hendrix also contributed to Mitchell's playing as well. I guess they just kinda played off each other, in the same way that many rhythm sections (bass players instead) play off their drummers (like Peart and Lee in Rush). Sorry to disagree with you about Lars though, DR. :)

Oh, that's fine. I never meant that he was the MOST inspirational, just the first one to give me the itch to become a drummer, particularly a thrash metal/prog rock drummer, and was kind of my drumming role model during the first 2-3 years I started playing. Metallica's "One" is what did it for me. I eventually evolved in my taste and inspiration, moving on to Niel Peart, John Bonham...these days, it's Stewart Copeland of the Police and Ian Thomas, who plays with Clapton.

    Everybody needs training wheels. :)

Good point, DR. Have you seen the clip of Copeland that is now running on Tama's website? It's pretty cool, but I think Tama's price of 9,000.00 US dollars for the Copeland setup is pretty outrageous (although I really like the Signature Snare). And that still does not include the cymbal setup. That's crazy money....

I listened to Metllica back in the 80s, and they did not wear well with me as time went by and they progressed into the 90s. These days I just don't bother....

Heard the samples and was not impressed... methinks this is just a scheme to try and get their old fans back with a slightly less mainstream style while retaining the fans they got from their more recent crap.

So I went out and bought the album the other day and I've been listening to it a lot.

'The Day That Never Comes' is still my favorite track, with 'All Nightmare Long' and 'Cyanide' in a close 2nd and 3rd. 'The Unforgiven III is good too...the intro to the song reminds me of the S&M album, which I enjoyed thoroughly. The *almost* 10 minute long instrumental is pretty sweet too...the guitar sound around the 4 minute mark is literally my favorite sound from an electric guitar :D 'The Judas Kiss' and 'Broken, Beat, and Scared' are both good songs, but nothing worth writing home about. As for the other two tracks I didn't mention...well, they're not bad, but I'm not too keen on them. :rolling:
