As you may have guessed by the name, I play a dwarf. The thing is in BG2 the half-orc race seems to have rendered those of us who are short of stature and hairy of face redundant - taking our CON bonus and a STR bonus to boot. I was just wondering if anyone else played dwarves and had thoughts on their value given that it seems there is no class which would not be more powerful if you were another race.

Dwarves are strong, I know, but us Barbarians are just stronger!
We have survived in nature since we were born, fighting Bears and Wilddogs with our bear hands.
It's made my pretty strong! :D

Aye there be dwarves here, but we all be in the Friendley Arm getting us some 'strong drawven ale'

Actually, I haven't played a D7D dwarf in BG or pen & paper. But I did start to get type cast as one in other games such as Warhammer and Shadowrun p&p. I'm thinking of playing one in Never Winters Night. I'll decide after I've read through the 3rd edition palyer's handbook.

(don't want to have to many unpleasant race restriction surprises)

    He Ironbeard,
don't get me wrong, I like dwarfs.
Hell, I even was one during BG1!
I'm just saying that, after my reincarnation :DI became a Barbarian, because I was a good dwarf in those old days.
And Barbarians are stronger, no doubt about it!

[IMG] So it seems that so far we have an ex-dwarf who became a half orc because they're better(adding weight to my belief that us poor dwarves are now redundant), and a non AD&D dwarf who says all the dwarves are in the friendly arm (are you referring to the chatroom?). Maybe if I wait I'll get some real dwarves to talk me out of taking that potion of polymorph to half orc :)

[IMG] Ironbeard, I think I might have found another clue as to the lack of Dwarves around here. There is a poll on: http://www.sorcerers.net/poll_arc1.php
which shows only 2% of BG2 people were going to play one. I've also realised why there were none in the Friendly Arm last night - we didn't look UNDER the tables.

Can't do without Jaheira or Viconia. So, no dwarves for me.

I think the Dwarf is far better. Being a Half-Orc just for the raw power means you sacrifice the perks of being a Dwarf.

For example the Dwarf's resistance to magic and poisons.

In 3rd Edition the Dwarf has more abilities like Stonecunning, etc. They also do not suffer a penalty to Intelligence unlike the Half-Orc.

The Half-orc suffers no penalty on his intelligence, he suffers a penalty on his charisma.
With a constitution of 19, Barbarians also get better resistance to poison.
BTW, this poison resistance isn't employed in BG2, you're just as vulnerable as everyone else, unless a constitution of 19 or higher.

yeah, I didn't seem to get any magic resistance either although I did in BG1.
Oh I've found a man to speak for dwarves, Dak'kon-
*know* that the flesh is weak
*know* that the steel is strong
*know* that the steel triumphs over the flesh
*know* that the dwarf has mastery over steel

I like dwarves. In the last multiplayergame my pal complained about my dc fighter-thief and I agreed to play something less powerful for he was frustrated by playing his monk at low level and see my hack happily. So I chose a dwarven berserker using - what else - axes. I have rarely seen him that disappointed :D

Arrrghhh - my Halfling Cleric (lv20) casts Symbol of Stun (too nice to cast death) on Shura's keyboard. 'Shorties' indeed.

In 3rd edition, a Half-Orc gets a +2 to strength, but a -2 to charisma, and a -2 to intelligence. No more con bonus!

Shura, *know* that a forge hammer to the kneecaps hurts like the nine hells!
Crazy J, *know* that I do not play pnp and therefore am at the mercy of what Bioware decide to do with the rules
Slappy *know* that I have looked at your link and find the difference between "playing race" and "favourite race" interesting
Everyone, *know* that I'm getting tired of doing my Dak'kon impression

That's like, stronger than a hill giant, Buahahahaha!!!
I always play low intelligence because you don't need a to high intelligence, just a high one to read some protection scrolls...

well, it seems that there aren't 7 dwarves on this board. Anyone- if you play a dwarf please post here and say that you are dwarven. Even if you have nothing else to say.
