Bob Dylan - The Witmark Demos: 1962-1964. ***1/2 (3 1/2 stars out of 5), if you are a big Dylan fan; ** (2 stars out of 5), if you are only a casual listener of Dylan's.

What I have in front of me is the new addition to the Bob Dylan Bootleg Series (vol 9). It is a two-disc set, housed in a nice enough slipcase, containing a well-done booklet with rare photos and the typical hand-written notes and lyrics that accompany such "vintage" consumer artifacts. My edition came with a bonus disc, a Dylan live performance at Brandeis Unversity in 1963.

The fact that these are hyped as "demo" recordings should be a big tip-off that they won't be polished studio recordings of the highest order. And they are not. They are raw, unpolished, and of uneven sound quality demos that Dylan recorded for his publishers very early in his career. If you are not a big Dylan fan, I recommend you pass on this one. And even if you are a Dylan fan, you may want to think carefully before leaping for this one, unless you have an extra $14.00 bucks to throw away on a dust collector for your CD collection.

Nevertheless, they are interesting to hear, regarding Dylan's development as a song-writer and performer. Disc 1 borders on fair to terrible. While a few of the tracks are interesting, they are often poorly performed, with Dylan making assorted excuses for his mistakes during the recording takes. Disc 2 comes off a bit better in terms of Dyaln's overall performance and song-writing. However, it is also interesting to hear how in the late 1970's Dylan was never very far from his folk roots, and echoes of his very early attempts still inform his later music. For instance, there are echoes of "Rambling, Gambling Willie" in Dylan's later piece, "Shelter From the Storm."

The sound quailty is OK for the most part, but more than a few of these are often muffled with almost no high-end.

The real pleasure, at least for me, was the live preformance. It is quite good, and the sound quailty is more than adequate, but it's short, only coming in at about 37 minutes. All-in-all this is an interesting set of recordings, mostly for Dylan fans. Otherwise, there is really not much here in the way of a finished, well-performed, recording.
