[IMG] The difference between Fighters on one side and Rangers and Paladins on the other side is the ability to get higher levels of weapon specialization.
To show this I have made a summary of how it affects their fighting competence.

Multiclass are not included because they are weaker due to two things:
    1. Their basic THAC0 is lower because their fighter level is lower.
    2. They are limited to Specialized (**).
Coran is an exception because of his Dex 20 and Mastery (***) in Missile weapons.

    Explanations:
GoOP = Gauntlets of Ogre Power (Str 18/00)
GoD = Gauntlets of Dexterity (Dex 18)
Values show THAC0 or extra damage and are based on maximum possible weapon specialisation.

    Shar-Teel +5
    Khalid +4

Doesn't she lack in constitution to make up for all that? I seem to recall her con. being low.

[IMG] You're right Sol'Kanar, she doesn't get any bonus HP's from Con, but here AC should be good. Besides, how bad can it be? Other warriors without a Con bonus to HP's include Kivan and Coran.

Wow, interesting posts, everyone. There is so much to consider... Guess that's why this game is legendary and other's are just ho-hum. ;)

Anyway, I got to thinking about Earl Grey's suggestion of "start as a Mage and dual class after reaching Mage-2." Presumably, the biggest advantage here is that you get to equip all the wands and so forth that I hear are abundant in BG. This seems cool, but would you really want your good, high-level fighter to have to give up on melee to shoot wands? Is there another advantage I am missing?

Thanks again for all the help, y'all!
