Not exactly as the title says. But one tread to channel all e reader questions might be better than several small ones

I Am going to buy an e reader. Two problems arise:

    1: DRM

DRM can be removed. It takes a bit of effort and one or two programs to do so.

    2: Formats.

Amazon Kindle support arw and mobi.
The rest of the world support everything else like e-pub.

If you do not want to muck about with drm removal software like me you have to choose: or the kindle or not the kindle.

And since I want to read English books, pdf rulebooks(hockey), own material made with Open-Office and Dutch books I am forced towards the non kindle route. That removes the Amazon book store from the list, which is a great loss.

Calibre is a free management program that runs very well. it can be used to convert formats like azw to e-pub. It needs a drm removal tool when drm is applied.

I focused mainly on two e-readers, the Kindle touch wifi and the Sony Prs-t1.

Barnes and Noble seems to come third in the race. But If they deliver the e-pub format like I think they do, than their online store might be a good replacement for Amazon.

So people, rant, educate and enlighten.

Kindle supports Kindle (AZW), TXT, PDF, Audible (Audible Enhanced(AA,AAX)), MP3, unprotected MOBI, PRC natively. You can also get HTML, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP documents on it through conversion which involves emailing the document to your Kindle email address and AFAIK is a free service as long as you aren't using the 3G connection (a small fee is charged if you use the 3G whispernet for downloading).

The above list is directly from the Kindle website; I don't have personal experience with a Kindle yet.

It is so easy just to buy an e-book online and read it on the pc.

But you have got to be care full. Amazon is not cheapest.

The laughing corpse: Amazon has this title's in two kindle versions with a different price.

One advantage with the Sony is that I can get it in a store. So, if its break down, no shipping problems.

I don't know about Holland, but in the US there are several places that sell the Kindle.

I just read that the Kindle may also support the e-Pub format in the near future.

Kindle touch not available in Holland trough Amazon. A local internet store sells them for the Dutch market. 169 euro. (WIFI) That is not the problem.

There is no reason not to buy the kindle touch.
There is no reason not to buy the Sony prs-T1

If one was a clear winner, it would be easy.

i have owned a Sony PRS 300 for a few years i am definitely very happy with it. I bought mine in the uk. did this on a trip, as i could not get the ereader in sweden where i live. It reads text, pdf, and epub, that is all i have tested. when reading pdf's it does take it page by page so they can be difficult to read, there are 3 different zoom options though which can help. From what i know it will not read all your 'openoffice' documents. but as you mentioned calibre can sort that out for you. i do all of my book purchasing these days with amazon, (the com not the co.uk) as epub published in the uk are usually not available outside the UK due to licensing, and publisher rights. had i have known that from the beginning i would of bought a kindle. now i have to drm everything before i am able to read it, unless i read off the pc screen. I am still happy with my sony though.

There is a rumour on the net. Amazon goes E-pub. It might take a while.

    Meanwhile: http://www.ebooks.com/

Barnes and Noble is e-pub but with their own DRM.

True. And I found some, like war and peace. The list is long. most of them are good books, but books you will never have paid for in a store. Library perhaps.

The books that you want to read will have drm.

E-pub will win. So E-pub it is. And that means the device that I can buy in a store.

    That leaves the Sony.

And so it is. Sony PRS-T1.

When you walk the path of no illegal drm removal, you must register to half the internet.

It is one of the advantages of using Kindle: only one place to register and it works.
It is so easy to download a drm removal too and use it.
