    I'm almost positive you can still backstab. Like you said, you only lose the ability to cast additional spells. That having been said TT is a much better spell for bards, IMO.

    I agree. TT is the spell that makes bards (blades especially) so awesome at higher levels.

    One of the reasons to go with a specialist mage is for the extra spells. Surely, if you multi-class then you are losing this benefit (sort of) by levelling slower.

    A thief has no business trying to backstab a heavily armored person in the first place. The best targets are mages and lightly armored opponents. And there is various ways to improve THACO, with spells and equipment.

    Yep, you can. Either from items(rings, pendants, potions) or a scroll in your quick-item slot.
    Try Shapechanging into a Mindlayer, then cast TT(+Timestop). :) On of my Blade's favorite tactics (cast from a Simulacrum via Helm of Vhailor that is).
    It's a bit cheesy though, but so are scripted spellcasters.
