It's been a long time since I played these games. Isn't there a setting that makes it so that whenever you write magic from a scroll that it ALWAYS works?

I can't remember what that was. I know that core rules requires a dice roll to see whether the write was successful or not, but it is frustrating to lose scrolls because of a dice roll.

    Thanks,
    EtR

Just set the difficulty setting to normal and you'll automatically always inscribe the scrolls.

If you ever play through BG1 before going to SOA, I suggest you pick the int manual so you have 19 int. It allows you to memorize spells at 95% success rate and also allows to learn all spells per level.

From the game screen click on the options button
then select game play and move the difficulty slider all the way to the left. This will also let you roll max hit points on level up too ;)
just remember to slide it back when you are done.

For easier handling you could install the '100% Learn Spells' option of the G3 Tweak Pack mod.

But the variant I prefer is to drink 2 'potions of genius' (? the violett one) before learning spells which raises your intelligence by 8.

Potions of mind focusing (blue, also raises DEX) can help too!

Two potions of genius? One isn't sufficient? All the mages in the game have 16 intelligence or higher. Therefore, even the potions of mind focusing will raise your intelligence to 19, which should give you something like a 95% chance to learn the spell. I suppose drinking two potions would take the chance up to 99%, but is it worth burning double potions for 4%? Just save before you scribe!

The mage with the worst intelligence is most probably Aerie with 16.
That gives her a chance of 70% to learn spells.
The mage with the best intelligence is Edwin with 18. That gives him a chance of 85 %.

    Here is the table:

    Int 17 = 75 %
    Int 18 = 85 %
    Int 19 = 95 %
    Int 20 = 96 %
    ...
    Int 23 = 99%
    Int 24 = 100 %

If you want to make sure to learn the spells without cheating you need two potion of genius for all NPC mages in the game.

A potion of genius costs about 400 gp without discounts for reputation. A high level spell scroll that you could loose costs much more.

But my point is: If you don't mind a little cheating the most convenient way would be to install this G3 mod.

It isn't the cost, it's the availability of potions of genius. There are a good many of them available, but they are in finite supply. Typically, what I do is hold onto scrolls that I can't scribe (for example I have the maximum number allowed in the spell book) until I find a scroll that I really want to have in my spellbook, and then drink potions and scribe them all at once. Of course, I typically save before attempting, even if my chance is upwards of 95% (that's still one failure in 20 attempts.)

I simply quicksave before I try to learn the spell.
No cheating, no loss of money ;)

    ^Well it's a form of cheating!

The memorize spell chances are buggy. It's not like it should be. That's why you must drink 2 potions of genius, one is not enough, it's not 98%, it's far less.

What's more, the 100% learn spell option in the mod doesn't work! (on my game)

Save from moving the difficulty slider each time you want to learn a spell, with the risk that you forget to put it back, your best chance is to stack scrolls, drink 2 potions and memorize all in a time. On this occasion, take advantage of your lore bonus to identify most items without spells.

The mod itself confesses that it can't raise memorisation chances above 99%, for some reason (seems pretty shoddy to me!). The fallibility of random number generators does the rest, with the higher than expected propensity for extremal results throwing up far more of those 1% failures than there should be.

Well there is also the problem that supposedly there is implimented a percentage chance reduction for memorizing spells above your Spell Caster Level.

And yes. before you bit my head off about it being a 3e rule. It's a 2e rule. Difference is that in 2e you don't get a bonus for lower level spells. It's just a reduction for learning higher level spells.

About putting the game on Easy/Normal difficulty to scribe scrolls 100% of the time; doesn't that make you get less XP each time you write a scroll?

@ Imoen the Bhaalchild: no, this does not affect the amount of XP's you get for scribing scrolls.

It isn't the fault of modders; as you mention it is an engine issue we cannot do anything about.

@Andyr: Actually, if G3 tweaks were to set the memorization chance to 150% instead of 100% the chances of failure really would be 0%. Memorization failure will never happen if you do it that way. That's what I do in my game.

IIRC the engine limitation applies to anything that is supposed to be 100% successful. There is always a 1% chance of failure, which (I think) is hard coded. Not sure about that though, but it would explain why no mods can get around it.
