    Hello,

I am new to Baldur's Gate, have the 4 in one package, the original BG and the first expansion. I do have a spell caster in my group, but I can't seem to cast the memorized spells. The spell cast key at the bottom is highlighted and when I click on it, it brings up the memorized spell, but is unhighlighted. I have tried to cast spells several times but can't get them to go off. I followed the directions that explained spell casting during the first part of the game in Candlekeep. Please help!

    Thanks

    Knightheart

    Has your character rested?

In BG, a spellcaster cannot gain spells to cast until he/she rests.

Alternatively, if the character is a mage multi-class, is he/she wearing armor? Mages cannot cast spells in armor.

It would help a bit if you post the type of character, stats, where you are in the game, etc. as I am just guessing based on likely things you might not know at the beginning of the game.

Yeah it does sound like a mage or bard in armour. Arcane spellcasters (=mages and bards) cannot cast spells in regular armour, even leather.

But is a mage able to wear any armour in BG? I know in BG2 that would only be possible with a multi or dual class mage, but I'm not sure how it works in BG.

As far as i know, most if not all armors should be unusable by any pure class mage, one exception being the Elven chainmail (enhanced edition only)

IIRC, the elfin chain mail was unusable by a pure classed mage in both BG1 and BG2. Only a dual-classed, mutli-classed, or bard could wear it.

A fighter 2/Mage X build would work fine, as would thief 2/mage X. I'd recommend fighter 3 or thief 3 instead so you get the extra weapon proficiency or backstab multiplier.
If you are planning on playing a pure class mage through ToB, I'd really recommend starting as a fighter or thief and dual classing just to open up the options for more weapons and items as bows are more powerful than slings for when you need to save your spells. A shield or buckler won't interfere in spellcasting in 2E so you can have that extra AC when you need it, along with the elfin chains. A fighter gives you extra HP, a thief gives you backstabbing and the opportunity to have somebody that can use one thief skill (might be good for pickpocketing if you don't have a bard, or specialize in open lock so your thief can put more points into stealth and traps). Which may not be that useful. A multi-class mage/thief is powerful, but in this this max/min dual classing I believe the fighter is the better deal.
