Just be careful early, until you get some levels.
Then go to town killing those useless peons!

It's hard in a way to play as an evil character. After completing some of the game's necessary quests, your reputation goes up. Plus, if you want to complete some of the additional side quests for experience, your reputation will go up after completing them as well. You can try to kill some innocents to lower your reputation, but often times it lowers it too much. Then you have a whole lot of commoners turning hostile and someone on your team will kill them. Before you know it, your reputation is at 3 and the Flaming Fist is attacking you. Yeah, it is difficult to be evil, but if you're up for the challenge, try it and have fun!

If you don't want a party member to kill those people (I guess peons is as good a word as any), just turn off the AI. It's the little latern in the bottom right hand corner, next to select all party members.

Yes, you have to be selective in your killings. I would recommend the snobs, and some annoying idiots (Noober, the drunk in Temple...).
Also, you can finish a slave in Coakwood mines, there will be no reaction.

    But it's harsh: -8, -10 rep...
BTW, why is it more despicable to kill a Flaming Fist mercenary than an innocent?
