Well, actually, yes, "what up" is dialect. The disappearance of the copula (that's the extra, non-meaning-bearing "is" in sentences like "what is up" or "she is sleeping") is a distinct and consistent feature of Black English, just as the disappearance of multiple modals is a distinct and consistent feature of standard American English. Would a British board tell American posters they write like ten-year-olds?

Yes, I am a linguist, and an English teacher. (-: It's getting off topic, I know, but it's rather rude to try to pronounce what is a "real dialect" and what is "just bad English, writing like a ten-year-old." Especially when the criteria you're using are incorrect and essentially based on what sounds lower class to you. Trust me, linguistically speaking, it's dialect. If I had a dollar for every person who claimed a language or dialect wasn't 'real' because of sociopolitical reasons, I could buy myself a Sword of Roses. (-: I once heard a Greek man make a very impassioned argument that Macedonian is really just bad Greek. Macedonian is a Slavic language similar to Russian, not Greek at all. This guy couldn't understand five words of it, but you couldn't convince him to save your life that it was an entirely different language rather than just Greek spoken by a stupid moron who didn't know how to speak Greek very well. Sad really.

Hey it's all right, Tal's just keeping tabs on the boards. (Although truthfully I suspected that it was Darien who edited it not Tal, so when Tal did it surprised me) Well sorry for the headache I won't do it again.

    Now about the wiz slayers...
This whole dualing thing has me wondering. Fighter/Cleric is a valid dual class. So Wiz Slayer/Cleric would be. Not using potions wouldn't be a problem seeing how healing through clerical means comes into play. The question is would someone who abhors magic and wizards find it right to use priest spells...

Hey, it's their board, they can demand the topics be in pig latin if they want to. (-: I just don't see the need for extraneous insults, that's all. No need telling somebody their dialect/language sucks, isn't real, is stupid, or childish.

Big B, I think the Slayer/Cleric thing works out ok, someone who finds strength in spirituality and hates "black magic" or something like that. It sounds feasible.

[IMG] OK, correct me if I'm wrong here, but last time I checked dialect was not used in writing. And even if you meant to use it like that, there's no way I can distinguish it from plain bad English I see so much of here on the boards. (I thought this fact was obvious but I seem to have to point it out.)

Believe it or not, I don't fix headlines for my own personal pleasure, but because if they're not written clearly and in good English a) it's harder to figure out what exactly the topic is supposed to be about, b) makes the search engine leave it out because of bad/incomplete spelling and finally c) is in violation of the forum rules that are available for everyone to read by clicking on the FAQ link in every html of the boards.

I wasn't insulting anyone in particular here, I was speaking in general. (Because, believe it or not, it won't hurt if everyone reads stuff like this from time to time.) And yet again, the person who it concerned got the point, but someone else won't stop bitching about it. tjekanefir, if you have too much time on your hands, please go post in Whatnots but don't mess with topics that weren't in any way directed at you, or your opinion on the matter required or asked for.

Gosh, now I'm nostalgic for Usenet. (-: You respond to my point and ask me a direct question, then turn around and tell me that answering would make me a bitch and I should go somewhere else because my opinion is neither wanted or needed? Why do you bother asking me a question if you obviously don't want the answer?

I already said, you're the one in charge. You can rewrite all the topics in Piedmontese if you feel like it. But yes, you -are- incorrect about what a dialect is. If you don't care, that's your business, but you really shouldn't ask people questions if you don't want to hear their answers.

[IMG] Oh gosh, didn't it seem to you like it was a rhetorical question? Since you can distinguish between a badly written headline and dialect, you should've been able to see that one coming a mile off. But I guess it wasn't that obvious, huh? As isn't a headline in the style it was posted while the rest of the post is in perfectly normal English. Makes me think of only one thing: the person who made it didn't bother much with it. Going for the ghetto effect is a quite original excuse I haven't heard yet here, but it doesn't matter, because anything even remotely resembling l33t talk is not supposed to be used anywhere on the boards. This is also stated in the FAQ/Forum Rules, your bible for the time you post here.

And if you already said that I'm in charge (twice now I think), why do you have such a hard time accepting this fact? And yes, for the last time, I don't need negative opinions from you (or anyone else, sorry if I'm not politically correct enough) regarding my little lessons to members on how to improve the quality of their headlines...

    P.S.
You're repeating yourself and still don't bother to take into account all of the points I made in my last post. I hope you don't reply again without any new info because I'll have to take 50 posts off your user record. (Truly, I hardly ever have enough time to bicker like this, but I suppose it's just bad luck on your part today. And mine for wasting my time with you.)

For the last time, this is none of your business. Big B and I have settled the matter in one post. So why do you insist on dragging it on? (Watch it, another rhetoric here, only meant to encourage you to think about what I said.)

Well folks; this has been a delightful little foray into acute pretention, but I respectfully and humbly request that we return to the topic at hand. Would those who have used this kit recommend overall that it is worth my time and effort to play SOA as a wizard slayer as it was a kit I initially rejected due to its apparently major setbacks. Do these limitations make you think more carefully about gaming strategy or are they simply frustrating?

How can "correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't 'dialect' mean spoken language only?" be a rhetorical question? Does that mean you really don't want to know if you're wrong? Dialects are definitely not spoken only; almost any dialect whose speakers are literate preserves at least some of its variations in writing. For a classic example of a written dialectical variation, British English spells the word 'colour' and American English spells it 'color'.

I'm really not trying to challenge your authority on the board here, you know. I'm not mounting some weird campaign to use dialects you don't like, and as far as I know I've used impeccably white English in every post I've made here.

I just think it's stupid that when you say something incorrect, like "that's not a dialect" or "Tokyo is the capital of China," it's considered a flame for me to say it's not so. And I think it's stupid that when you say "Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it true that [insert wrong statement here]?" I'm supposed to not respond.

If you want to dock me 50 points for that, then be my guest. It's your board, you can dock me 50 points if you don't like my hair. I've never suggested otherwise.

Since you've just repeated yourself for the third time and I don't want to insert any more posts unrelated to the topic here I'll just take 50 off and make a mental note to do so again with any wiseguy before I even bother replying to their posts. You should know when to shut up already.
Be glad that I don't ban your ass for stealing so much of my valuable time.

    -Tal

    [IMG] To Will:

Since I played a Wizard Slayer let me first say that this kit is worse than the other fighter kits. There's no way around that. However if you enjoy playing a fighter and would like an extra edge when fighting enemy mages then a Wizard Slayer can be fun.

Flail of the Ages is a wonderful choice of weapon for this character. Try to stick with one handed weapons so you can get the benefit of a good shield - Shield of Harmony for example.
Note: In ToB I think shields aren't quite as useful due to the large number of extraordinarily potent weapons you can find there. Something to consider if you will continue this character in ToB.

IMO the main advantage of the WZ is that Stoneskin doesn't give a mage as good a protection as it normally does.

Magic Resistance is nice, but don't count on it as your defense against any one specific nasty spell attack. What it does is give you a generally better protection which makes the character feel stronger and easier to play. That is a good thing. :)

That was pathetic, tjekanefir made some perfectly reasonable arguments and Taluntain gets all offended cause soemone had the nerve to argue with him, childish. No wonder this board is deserted most of the time, the moderators are assholes.

[That last sentence above couldn't be more wrong. This board is filled with posters most of the time, and the moderators are most definitely not assholes. Someone else can speak for the veracity of the rest if they so choose :) BTA]

On the topic of Wizard Slayers, their "CASTINGFAILURE" ability has an argument of 25 (look at param2 on SPCL132), I wonder if the casting failure effect is actually 25% rather than the quoted 10%? Anyway, they still suck.

    bye everyone! 8-)

    In regards to Wiz slayers:

I don't really think that this kit is really impaired. When I played through with my Kensai (pure kensai), I didn't really use many 'magic items' except for a ring of protection and magic weapons.. and boots of speed, I guess. and it would have very very gladly traded rop +1 for some nice armor...
besides, most armor cannot be used by people wearing ROP anyway

so what does the wiz slayer really lose out on:

potions (in the 'old' game)---I never really used them any way (good clerics in the party, not my style of play)

can wizard slayers use things that are, in a sense, armor--like magic gauntlets/belts and boots? if so, then there is really no serious disadvantage to this class IMHO

and they get magic resistance (always very powerful in any amount) and they can work on the meanest monsters in the game--spell casters

with regards to the argument above:

I don't always agree with the moderators, but they run a tight ship which makes this one of the best message boards I have ever seen.

Is 'what up?' dialect? I don't care. But I understand why it was edited.

    "What up"

I cannot believe an argument was actually started over this. Frankly, it seems a little anal to me.

Did you guys know that "Doh" is in the Oxford Dictionary?

    WZ's can't use magic...
    - belts
    - necklaces
    - rings
    - bracers/gloves
    - cloaks
    - potions (healing allowed in ToB)

IMO the Wizard Slayers has WAY to much disadvantages to even be fun to play :nono: . I mean the Kensai is the best fighter kit, then the berserker and then the normal fighter. I've played them all, and the WZ isn't even fun to plat IMOO :(

Some people go for powerplaying (ie. the Kensai, preferably dualled to a Mage for uberpotent effect) and some other people like a challenge... (ie. going for a WZ or a Beastmaster, or even a frikkin Bard for roleplaying purposes)

No doubt about it, WZ is a potent kit imo, if you know how to play it. And like Earl Grey has proven. You are able to solo the game with this kit.

    Cheers.

In BG1 I simply loved playing Bards...too much fun and roleplaying-talking they were an awesome class. But in BG2 I never touched them...how can I compare myself to Haer'Dalis?? There is no challenge, I couldn't get nicer than him in a thousand years...

    As for the original topic:

A Wizardslayer can easily be put aside in favor of a Paladin. Get the Carsomyr and a few magic items and you'll have nice magic resistance far earlier than a Monk or WS. Plus if you play an Inquisitor mages won't really cause any trouble.

I have to keep wondering why these old posts are being resurrected simply to echo the thoughts of plenty of people on SP: Wizard Slayers suck, Kensai/Mages rule, etc., etc.

If it's a bad class, then stop trashing it as is already! Sure, it can't compare with someone's uber-Assassin or Monk, but it definitely makes for great roleplaying - and a challenge.
