    I remember reading it somewhere...

Does anyone know exactly? I want to keep my Defender+5.

Sure man, I know how generally, but I never used it.

Import your character with all his stuff normally, and start the game. After the Loading screen is done, (Right after while the load screen is still there and the circle is complete, must be before the screen fades into the opening cutscene)
Hit pause. When the loading screen disappears, a black screen will appear, and you can access you inventory. Drop all your stuff on the ground, and unpause. Watch the opening scene then just pick your stuff up after imoen rescues you.

This may not be exact, but I am pretty sure it is at least along the lines of this. Let me know if it works, I might try it next time I play through BG2.

[IMG] In multi-player mode, after Imoen rescues you, save the game and quit. Reload and delete the character that you imported from BG then re-import your BG character again...voila! They're standing around with all of their blazing, glorious regalia. You can do the same for your old BG npc cohorts if you want. I didn't like losing all of that stuff either. But I am also running a normal party without their "stuff" just for kicks and grins.
