If you could choose one leader as the greatest leader of all time, who would it be? It can be from the present day, or any in the past. From ancient Egypt or Rome, During the early 1900s, any time. And why would you say this person was a great leader? What profound impact did they have on society?

Genghis Kahn, he was able to unite a whole bunch of warring tribes, and still conquer a lot of Europe and Asia.

The prussian fieldmarshall Blücher: He fought Napoleon and when prussia was defeated and the weak prussian king was forced to make peace with france he opposed him and fled to russia to fight on against Napoleon.

Eventually he helped to defeat Napoleon in the battle of Leipzig and then once and forever at Waterloo where he rescued Wellington's hard pressed troops from annihilation, turning the tide of battle. His resolution and determination inspired a whole nation.
Blücher, with von Stein, Yorck, Hardenberg and Scharnhorst made the germans rise up against Napoleon, paving the ground for the german national identity and for the rise of prussia. He is an example for the best prussian tradition: Not to obey when you know better.

As for a king and leader I would name Karl the great, followed by emperor Friedrich II.

As for political leader I would say Pericles. Under his leadership Athens developed an advanced culture in almost everything (politics, fine arts, philosophy, literature etc.) Also, he created the strongest navy of Mediteranean and he prepared his city for the war against Sparta.

As for a military leader Alexander the Great and Erwin Rommel. Alexander created an empire having an army of just 30000 men. Rommel achieved unbelievable victories against British in North Africa, while he was always outnumbered and undersupplied.
