Bloody movie industry. It isn't so that all plot and movie writers ran out of ideas, or that all plots have been written so that there is nothing left to do but to recycle the movies of the past. No, the studios are merely risk averse, and try to make money of 'established brands' (that's why you get all those game sequels, too). It's a fairly safe bet that all those movies will be glitzy, well made - and largely boring.

A quick look at my dvd collection and there are a few remakes in there I like a lot: Dawn of the Dead, Batman Begins & The Dark Knight (don't know if this really counts as a remake, but it is a reboot of the Batman movie franchise) and Star Trek. And I'm quite looking forward to seeing the new Planet of the Apes and the new Spider-man movie. So remakes aren't a bad thing per se in my opinion.

But a lot of them aren't necessary. I heard they were also making a remake of Lethal Weapon, of which I really don't see the point. I mean, everybody likes a buddy cop movie, but they probably aren't gonna use the original story (and if they do, it's not that unique that they can't do it under a different name), so why stick the Lethal Weapon name to it? Probably like Ragusa said, to increase instant recognizably, but more likely, it will just annoy fans of the old films.

I agree, that some Movie-settings or franchise benefited from a re-boot or remake. Batman being probably the best example. Justifiably so.

But most of them are pointless, as already stated, and some are quite obsolete.
And the list Raw posted above makes my head spin.

But the absurdness of the new age. Imagine, just a few days ago I read a comment on Y-Tube (was watching some 'The Queen' clips, -where a little-prick (for lack of better words compared Freddy and Band, to Justin B. (will not spell his whole name). If I was just a few years older, I would've suffered a stroke.

I guess the new Blade Runner will have a Timberlake or another Idol-actor, playing Deckard or Roy.

Hollywood is constantly remaking movies, that should not be a surprise to anyone. Some movies on that list have been in development hell for a long time, so do not expect every one of them to be made anytime soon, if ever.

Ug, I hear the Blade Runner thing is for real (either a prequel or a sequel), and that Ridley Scott will be producing and directing. Even with the original director, it seems these decades-later returns to the subject matter never recapture the spirit of the originals, and thus they ultimately hurt them or their legacy by muddying the waters. It's not hard to understand why - 1982 was a far different time than 2011, no matter where in the future the story lies. :(

Apparently, Ridley Scott said in an interview that there would be a lot of material for a sequel, so that might be the plan...

I agree that 90% of those remakes are pure BS. C'mon.... Like the Spider-Man one. Why do another "How he became Spider-Man". The first Sam Raimi one was not even 10 years ago...

It's very hard to get an original idea made into a movie these days. Movies are insanely expensive, and most studios won't greenlight anything unless the likelyhood of there being a hit is sufficiently high. At the very least, a film has to tap into an existing fan base or nostalgia. Which is why we're seeing not just remakes (TV remakes, too), but films and TV shows based on established novel and comic book series. They figure if they can get the die-hards to come out on opening weekend and buy the DVD's, that's enough to break even, and everyone else is where the profits lie.

It's cynical and depressing, but you have to remember, it's a business. The major studios aren't trying to create the next novel idea, they're trying to sell lunch boxes. Which is why the music industry is dying - radio stations only play the same 10 songs all day long as they've deemed those 10 songs the most likely to get listeners to stop flipping the dial long enough to listen to the commercials. They aren't in it for the music, they're in it to sell air time. As a result, independent labels are flourishing by eschewing the traditional music model altogether.

With the technological leaps we've seen with computer animation and effects, I suspect this is where the movie industry will be heading in the next decade. It's the only hope we have for more original, less commercially-minded content.

ALL THAT SAID - some of the remakes and adaptations coming out now are pretty sweet. 2008's Star Trek was KILLER, for example. Fright Night looks pretty good, too. I could go on. But for me, the current remaking spree isn't ALL bad.

Yeah, remakes can be good or bad, just as any other movie can be good or bad. Remember also, that many movies are remakes of books, so another version of the story isn't always a remake. Think of something like Romeo and Juliet which has been done hundreds of times. Or Lord of the Rings. I don't know anyone who prefers the first 1970s version over the Peter Jackson version.........

If its based on a book, its not a remake. Just to clarify it.

I don't consider PJ LotR a remake of the 70' one.
It was Jackson and the technology of this time, that made an adaption possible, worthy being called so.

As for Romeo & Julia, it's classic literature and a play, and therefore prone to adaption and being played yet again on different stages of this world. Something even the best Blockbuster cannot claim.

But on a another note, what do people usually want in from Re-boot or Re-make?
A new interpretation? A fresh looking format? Old story with New faces and effects?

The difference between refilling a story that has previously been in another film, book, or "classic literature" is just a technicality. It's all about putting a (hopefully) new spin on something that has gone before. Even most of the stories in The Bible are just remakes of more ancient stories. Some of the remakes will be awful and some will become new classics in their own right.

It would make more sense if they remade really bad movies, instead of the classics. Remakes of good movies allways ends up being utter crap anyway.

The remake of Oceans Eleven was much better than the original. So was the 2006 version of Casino Royale. And the 1954 version of A Star is Born is better than the 1937 version.
