[IMG] I'm looking to build a new machine and I need a new case. I'm curious if anyone has ever seen a case in which the "window" is on the right side of the case instead of the left? This machine sits on the left side of the desk so the window isn't visible except to the wall.

having it on the right will get you a spectacular view of the metal that keeps the motherboard in place.

you would probably have to handmake one.

Exactly, I figure if they make all sorts of things for people that are left handed, they must make things for people who keep there computer on the left also? Is there only one way/direction to build a PC?

I've never seen a PC with the mobo bottom facing the left side by design. You could implement some cooling solution there, but a window? Well, nope. You'd just see the bottom of the mobo, as Proteus said. Then again, some cases aren't that difficult to mod if you really care, or you can build an acrylic case from scratch if you're inclined that way.

I'm guessing you are not based in India...because a friend of mine is a PC retailer who specialises in custom systems.

He recently built a plexiglass cabinet with engine oil between the two glass layers to act as a coolant...with an OC'd 4.2 GHz C2D E6600 CPU...as well as a system he calls the Warhead...custom cabinet shaped like a missile warhead...with fans on either end of the cabinet...the motherboard is horizontally fixed with 4 8800 GTX's in quad-SLI (IIRC...this is the term) setup...

If they adhere to the ATX standard (which is pretty much every standalone motherboard), then yes they are built the same direction.

You could put some feet on the top and flip the case upside-down. You'd have to make sure you can mount your drives upside-down first though so that they were rightside-up afterwards. :)

But then your optical drive(s) would be near the floor which is probably not optimal

I had the exact same issue when I was buying a new computer. Finally, I've just decided to go with a case that didn't have a window on the left side, just plenty of ventilation holes.

Here's my experience with case windows on the right hand side.

First, it's most likely of the BTX motherboard standard. The other cases use the ATX standard, but have to rotate the motherboard to do so. Silverstone makes a few cases like this...the TJ06 for example. For cases that use the ATX standard, there are a few things that get relocated (usually the power supply to the bottom of the case), but since the floppy, IDE, SATA, PCI, along with other card slots and connectors are usually on the lower portion of the motherboard, they are now on the top as well. For some, that makes connecting drives easier...and the video card, along with any other cards, will now face up.

    Either way works though. :rolling:

There's a few cases on the market that have the inverted motherboard design that makes everything face the other way. I've heard that they are generally better for cooling as it allows for components that generate more heat and are more heat resistant (ie hard disk drives, power supply etc) to be grouped together and separated from more thermo-sensitive components (cpu, gpu). Unfortunately the few that I have seen aren't cheap, and didn't come with windows (a cutting tool and a window kit would fix this), so you'd probably be better buying a new desk.
