A tech problem, please help?

    [​IMG] After I installed the 128 mgb SDRAM chip in my PC, it has had a problem. It just shuts down whatever is on (internet, a game, etc) and reverts to the desktop. There doesn't seem to be a pattern that I can tell. I have an emachine 500is, its 500mHz, what else can I say, nothing fancy but since I put this chip in it has doen this. I tried to defrag the other day and I couldn't because, the message said, something wass wrong with my C drive! Any clues? I know this is limited info but its all I have to go on myself. Thanks.

    It's either you RAM chip or the mounting. Did you take out the old RAM? Are all DIMMS on the same memory size? Does it work with the old memory back in? It should like an error in the DIMM you bought. Did you test the memory? I'd take it out and put it back in again to insure the connection is right. If the problem continues I'd test the memory. You may need to replace the DIMM. Is it still under warinty?

    [​IMG] There is no warranty, I bought it cheap. I'll check the mounting soon. It works fine enough most of the time that I'm cool with it until I replace it with a better chip. We'll see.

    what bus speed do you use, is your new memory up to specs.

    had problem when i tried ti use 133Mhz bus speed with pc100 memory

    I have 133 memory I think, as far as mHz goes, so the prolem may actually that but in opposite, if you know what I mean? How can you determine bus speed and can it be changed?

    in most motherboards of today you change the bus speed in the bios setup.

    PC133 memory will work fine with a 100MHz front side bus...

    Maybe the two DIMMs won't work together. I've seen that happen before. Try to obtain two of the same brand instead.

    You know, I reread you original post, and realized maybe it IS your C: drive. Did you run scandisk on your hard disc drive to check it out? A problem with your C: drive could explain your symptoms.

    I do admit the timing of just putting in the new memory is suspicious, but that may not be your problem.

    [​IMG] Thanks for the reponses. Actually, I can't run Scandisk because of the problem with the C drive! Or so it says, anyway. I'm going to try it again today, though. The problem has drastically diminished for unkown reasons but its still there. Sometimes in-game I get the blue screen error message but I can't remember what the last one said. I'll get more specific in a later post if I can. Thanks.

    this might sound stupid, but did you run any applications when defragging or scanning?, if you did that might be the reason.

    Else I have had problems with my hard drive as well, where it wouldn't run scandisk. I think I did a reinstall of windows, though it's a long time ago, so I'm not sure

    perhaps your problem is in the setup of the given ram, it may be that you have to setup or change a few things in the BIOS
